Apple Oct. 22 event: We Still Have A Lot To Cover

While I may not be a huge fan of Apple computers (only own iOS-based devices), I have to say that the new Mac Pro looks like quite an interesting work of engineering. Not enough for me to pay $3k though. 😛

As far as workstations go, $3k is quite competitive. We have spent well over that for Dells here at work.

The MacPro not going with Quattro seems strange. But, I guess with such a low volume product, professionals who wish to use OSX might be okay switching from whatever CUDA based software as well.

The specs are terrible for $3k. I was expecting it to be a lot more in price or a lot less in hardware.

I wonder what happens with Garage Band on iOS. I paid for it way back when I got my iPad 2. I don't care if they give it out for free, but I just don't want to upgrade my copy to find out I got upgraded to some freemium version (free with in-app purchases). I've had that happen a few times with companies like Gameloft adding ads to an app and making it free, but they just updated the original version that I paid for. :\

I can't disagree there. The Dell workstation that I use is valued at about $3k, and that doesn't even include the monitors! 😱 I'm just referring to how Apple doesn't really have a mid-range product. If you want a desktop, you have to get a Mac Mini or a Mac Pro.

EDIT:

Hmm since it's only free for new device registrations, there probably won't be any sinister changes.

I don't think Apple subscribes to the freemium type of ecosystem. They allow it, but none of their apps are like that IIRC. If GarageBand is free, it will be the full version. Or, a free version will be added and the premium version will stay.

A mid-range product would be nice for people like me (who wouldn't mind a decent OSX desktop for development / work). I think they figure those people will just get a MBP and connect a monitor.

Quattro? As in, Audi all wheel drive?

I assume you meant Quadro, as in nVidia. And MacPro's are typically used for video, audio, and visual editing. Which CUDA is not used for. Most applications out there are OpenCL (All Adobe apps for instance).

because the quadros suck at opencl. apple is opencl

Well my rPro is feeling super good right now. Haswell upgrade really is a side grade apart from the PCI-E SSD.

Yes, Quadro. One of those stupid 'Q' words. I thought Adobe only recently started supporting OpenCL in any meaningful sense. I am pretty sure they supported CUDA for awhile.

I would prefer if it had Audi all wheel drive though. It would match my A5. >_>

I know a lot of people like the new case, but I prefer the older ones. They were sexy.

mavericks free = awesome. I'm still on SL; guess lagging paid off =D

I don't need this new iPad but I sure as fuck want it...along with a surface pro 2.

iPad 2? Are you kidding me? They should've at least brought in the iPad 3 or something as a slight upgrade. iPad 4 internals without retina maybe would've been suitable.

And they are leaving the iPad 2 in place. Hmm. Strange.

Yeah, I was hoping the 4th gen would go to $399, so I could upgrade my wife's iPad 2 without having to look for a deal.

I guess I will try to hit a deal on a refurb or someone out clearing inventory instead.

ipad2 for $399 is a fucking joke. hopefully that means my ipad3 will retain some resale value LOL

Not sure if I feel like upgrading from my fourth generation iPad to this one. I'm disappointed with the lack of a storage bump on the bottom tier. I'm also not sure if it includes the touch sensor.

I looked into trading my 64GB iPad 4 with LTE in at Amazon, but they want to give me ~$440 for one in "like new" condition. 😱 I'd probably be better off finding someone that wants to buy it instead.
