Well yeah, 1080p makes sense for 21". a 21.5" 4K is like having a 10.75" 1080p (no scaling).
MacOS and Windows handle scaling differently, so that 21.5" 4k display isn't the worst thing in the world in MacOS.

Now that I'm thinking about it though, larger would be nicer for scaling reasons. The 2x res (so retina 1080p) would be fine, at that physical size, but if one wanted to run a simulated 2560*1440 or something, it would get too itty bitty I think.

I worked on a 24" 4K for a short while. Horrific. Would not go smaller than 27/28" for 4K personally.

For gaming though it would be awesome. I wish the 4K were 24". 21.5" is way too small.

The Retina iMac looks great and even at 5k which is a lot more pixels than 4K I can work on it just fine.

Going LG for displays was a smart move. Nobody wants to pay the Apple premium over an aluminum case on the display.
