Apple now officially supports installation of Windows XP on Intel Macs

Don?t forget to follow best practices for updating and protecting your Windows system (see ?Word to the wise? to right).

lol

Any chance to have a random bash at MS

Macs use an ultra-modern industry standard technology called EFI to handle booting. Sadly, Windows XP, and even the upcoming Vista, are stuck in the 1980s with old-fashioned BIOS. But with Boot Camp, the Mac can operate smoothly in both centuries.

Dear god, ever thought of the fact that the traditional BIOS still isn't broke, so thats maybe why its still being used?

No, that's just something that has to be said in this day and age. Too many people aren't updating. I haven't run a public webserver in a long time, but I'd bet there's still code red stuff going on.

It isn't broke, it's just brain dead. Viva la firmware!

Heehee the Apple cultists (and I know a few- having dinner with them tonight!!) are going to burn Steve Jobs at the stake!!! This is a defining moment for Apple. Won't be too much longer (1-2 years?) and no more OS X- just Microsoft Vista installed on every Apple sold!

Only if Apple fails and Intel buys the Macintosh line. 😉

Nah, OS X is a really great operating system. I've been playing with OS X on an old Mac I picked up for about 3 months. It's basically UNIX with an awesome "X11" GUI. I have absolutely no desire upgrade to Vista. I have found 99% of the apps I use for Windows for OS X (which is about 50 or 60 apps total). I picked up an iMac Core Duo for my wife last month and it has been running super-solid since day 1. They are good machines with a good OS. With this setup, you'll be able to do your normal work in OS X, then reboot into XP for gaming and those few apps that there aren't OS X counterparts for.

Plus, there's talk of virtualization with the next release. Imagine...OS X and XP with some sort of "fast user switching". That'd be awesome!

Well I agree with everything you said. My girlfriend has a G5 and put the newest OS on it and loves it. I wish I could buy Panther or Leopard Retail and run it on any old hardware as I think Apples hardware is too expensive for what you get. This does make we want to buy an Apple now that I could game on it though. But too much $!!

However I really do believe that Apple is planning on dropping software support eventually and just selling the hardware and using a Microsoft or other OS and let them provide the support for the software. More profit and less headaches. This is just the first big step toward that end.

I sure hope not. I like the UNIX base that OS X is on. It's extremely stable and powerful. It's like having a Windows machine and a Linux machine all in one. Want to run the latest apps? No problem. Want to set up an HTTP/FTP server? No problem either. It's nice that way.

As far as the cost goes, Apple is "brand name" and charge more for their design work than other shops. At the same time, you can get a pretty powerful machine for just a bit more expensive than anywhere else. I wrote out an upgrade guide for the Intel Mini; it came out to approximately $1500 for a Mac Mini with a 2ghz Core Duo, 2gb ram, a 100gb 7200rpm 2.5" SATA hard drive, wireless G card, Bluetooth, 4 USB ports, one Firewire port, integrated 64mb video card that can support HD, DVI output, analog/digital audio output, and a dual-layer 8x DVD burner. That's not too bad considering all of that fits in the palm of your hand and is quieter than a Dell. Just depends on what you want I guess 🙂

Our Bios today is filled with workarounds for everything. They didn't think it through when they made it I guess. It is time to move on to something a little more... well new age maybe. It is stupid for Vista to be using a Bios setup at this time.

I for one think this is a great move and all us Mac users will benefit from this. Apple will hopefully be selling a ton of hardware because of this. Who cares if they run windows, apple still makes the sale.

To those who say it is too expensive for what you get. Use a mac, and you will know why. They are the most beautiful computers on this planet. They tie everything together so seamlessly with the greatest attention to detail. It is the reason you would buy a BMW over a Ford. Plus, I dont pay full price. I go on eBay and find the people who bought it and thought they would like it but didnt. So I get a massive discounts buying it on eBay. I make sure it is within Apple's complimentary AppleCare, so I can buy 3 year Apple Care and be done with it. Deals baby.

It is a computer, not a car lmao. I dont go riding my computer around during rush out traffic for a couple of hours a day.

Here's a little price guide for quick reference:

Basic Intel Mini: $599 ($579 with an academic discount)
2gb ram: $229 (OWC, macsales.com)
Pioneer DVR-K06 DVD burner: $90 (Newegg)
Intel 2ghz T2500 Core Duo processor: $417 (Newegg)
* 2.16ghz T2600 available elsewhere for about $650
Seagate Momentus 100gb 7,200rpm "quiet" 2.5" SATA drive: $190 (newegg)
Windows XP Professional with SP2 (OEM): $140 (Newegg)

Totals:
$1525 for an OS X-only system
$1665 for an OS X/Windows XP system
Add another $200 to either one to get the latest 2.16ghz processor

Not too bad, considering the Mini includes or can support the following:

-Dual-core processor with 2mb l2 cache
-Lots of ram @ 667MHz DDR2
-Fast SATA internal hard drive
-CD/DVD burner (dual-layer, 8x DVDr, supports DVD-RAM)
-Airport (integrated wireless B/G card)
-Bluetooth 2.0+EDR
-Tiny footprint
-Quiet
-DVI output with VGA adapter (LCD or CRT monitor-compatible)
-64mb Intel GMA950 (kinda cruddy but supports HD playback)
-Gigabit Ethernet
-4 USB 2.0 ports
-1 Firewire 400 port
-OS X (UNIX-based)
-Windows XP Pro

I bet a lot of people would like something this small and quiet on their desk. It has plenty of functionality. As far as expansion goes, just about any card you can get internally you can now get as an external device.

Good points- I hope the dual boot Apple systems will convert enough people over to OS X that game devels. will finally start making all their games OS X compatible right from the start. Maybe give Microsoft a run for the money on marketshare even. If all games ran on OS X and the hardware was a little better priced I would go for an Apple for sure. I agree that Apples are a work of art. My girlfriends G5 is a dual processor liquid cooled beast with no ugly wiring inside at all! Layed out very well. But it cost her thousands of dollars (forget excatly how much) and had no video card and only 512MB of ram!! To me thats a rip-off. If they want to increase their customer base and I think they do with a passion right now they are going to have to provide more bang for the buck as far as their hardware goes. Also here is a interesting read on the OS battle coming soon. http://www.overclockers.com/tips00925/

Naturally your computer isn't a car and you don't ride around in traffic for a couple hours a day. But what point are you trying to make? Ever heard of something called an analogy? You usually don't take this literally, they are to illistrate a point.

Social skills class recommendation for you. Maybe English language while we are at it.

This is what I have lined up on my game machine save at newegg.

ASIPRE X-Nvigator AL500 w\500Watt PSU
ASUS 939 NF4 SLI
2x EVGA 7900GTs
A64 3800+ Dual Core
2GB Corsair DDR400
16x DVD-RW
74GB Raptor

~1570 bucks

Replace the 7900GTs with a single X1900XT and we are looking at about 1350 bucks.

Which one do you think will run circles around the other? Intel integrated graphics? The Nvidia Geforce 3 from 2001 runs circles around that video chipset.

Obviously sarcastic examples are lost on you. The point is, this is a computer, who cares if it is pretty looking? Paying a large premium for a look and feel like you would with a car is silly with a computer.

The look i agree. But feel... i disagree. No laptop i have ever had the chance to touch felt anything like my Powerbook or my ibook for that matter. The way everything works together on the mac is just fantastic. Paying a couple hundred buck more for something like this is an easy compromise. Like I said before though, I like to find deals so I am not paying this premium you speak of.

EDIT: I would contest and say that paying more for a high end car is a waste as well, all you do is drive from A to B in it. So why all the luxury for such a mundane task?

It could go the other way. It's worth paying a premium for Apple hardware now because their machines can run EVERY consumer desktop software out right now. If you buy a normal PC, you have to make a choice to run Windows (or Linux) only. On a Mac, you now have a level of flexibility that no other platform offers right now.

I'm especially exceited about this now, because I've been mulling the idea of starting a small business at some point in the future doing animation and video production. With Boot Camp, I can buy one of the Intel versions of the PowerMac, load it up with a nice Quadro and plenty of storage and run 3ds MAX on the Windows partition for animation work while using Final Cut and Motion for the editing/compositing work. It'd be more expensive than buying a PC, but cheaper than buying a Windows workstation AND a PowerMac if I wanted an equal amount of flexibility.

In the short term, it is good for MS because it'll sell more copies of Windows XP. It could bite them in the butt down the road as more of the dual booters have a chance to use both OSes side by side for an extended period of time and start to see the advantages of OS X. I've been waiting for this to happen ever since the Intel Macs were introduced. It puts Apple back in the game in a big, big way.
