They won't have i7 in them. Its way too early for that. If you are lucky the higher end macbook pro's might offer Core 2 Quad CPUs...

My MacBook, which I have always loved, has spontaneously started dying over the past few days - wish I had bought AppleCare! I am hoping for a whole new MacBook, or at least a substantial refresh.

i can understand why they got rid of the full dvi connector and went for the mini dvi, but eliminating firewire 400 on the regular macbook? thats a no-no. thats basically one of the reasons my dad got his macbook, because it was one of the only laptops that had 6 pin firewire in a 13" configuration.

the mbp on the other hand, thats fine if the eliminate the 400, because it still has the 800 (could be 1600/3200 too but who knows) port. its awesome that they moved all the ports to one side so now its more in line with the macbook. i wonder whats under that piece of tape near the expresscard slot?

what i want to see in the new mbps:

faster cpu - its a given
less heat output - doable since they are using the nvidia chipset which i think has the north/southbridge into one chip as opposed to the intel one that has 2 seperate ones?
9600GTm - its a given considering its on a nvidia mobo
blu-ray - possibly, but do they have a slim slot-load blu-ray reader or writer yet?
DDR3 - who knows
higher res display - 1680x1050 LED Matte BTO would be nice..
black or silver colored aluminum - ill take black please!
bigger hard drives - its a given

i mean, those are the usual upgrades, but i hope apple does a "one more thing" or surprises everyone with a new cool feature only found on the macbooks/mbps. remember how steve jobs surprised everyone with the 17" and 12" powerbook? or how he introduced firewire 800, or the first ever backlit keyboard on a notebook, etc. i REALLY hope he does something like that tomorrow! :)

First off, I didn't see -- and Appleinsider didn't mention -- where Magsafe was on the MBP. So is that the tape thing?

More importantly, you just re-hashed my "specs" versus "toys" argument. In some sense, the Macbook pros are literally three years old, with the only "toys" being multi-touch, mag-safe, Front Row (or more aptly, the remote, since Front Row is software, but you no longer get it for free, so perhaps that doesn't count) and LED displays. Everything else they've added has been specs (faster procs, more memory, etc). In fact, Apple actually LOST some toys, like when they lost S-video, removed FW 800 (and then put it back), the modem, the aforementioned remote etc.

The problem being that there are only so many toys they can add. Where else can they go? TV tuners? Cellular WiFi? (We can eliminate WiMaxx, since they're no longer using Intel chipsets). Something else we're not thinking of? I mean, no, I don't expect the Apple to do either of those, but what can they add? I mean, sure, faster is nice, but I want better.

Although they do make slim slotload BluRay drives... they are not cheap... as in hundreds of dollars not cheap.

I can definitely see your point about the 6pin firewire. I almost never use mine, but there have been a couple of occasions where it has come in handy, and I can definitely see how someone like a musician or audio editor would want it.

Yea.. I don't use my FW400 all the time, but it is nice to have. I don't know.. Maybe the 17" model will have all the added ports.

The other thing that I just thought about and heard mentioned on "This Week in Tech" was that all the ports are on the left, so there potentially could be a Docking Station (ala the iMac display with slide in port) for these new Macbooks/Macbook Pro. That would be great, if the displays aren't too expensive. I would love to see just a plain dock as well that could interface with two displays.

We'll see.

How is Magsafe a toy and not a spec? I am not trying to spark a flame or anything, it is just that I see the magsafe as very useful regardless of where they got the design from, they are the only notebook manufacturer using a magnetic power cord that can be easily plugged and unplugged in the event of a trip. After seeing how many of the old style power adapters broke at the connector, I like this new design. I think that they have finally sorted out the fraying issue, so that is also a plus.

The Magsafe is awesome. Also I love the fact that you have the extended power cable and the the plug cap. Makes it convenient when I leave my dorm and go home.

That was great too when I was at school. Long cable at my apartment and then the little stub for when i would go into school. The next best thing is what I had a few months ago, where I had a power adapter at my house and at Tyranicus' apartment. So when I would go over there to chill, I wouldn't have to haul over a power adapter.

Yea the power adapters are cheap enough, that I bought two. One that I keep in my bag, and the other than I keep at the office, so if I'm out and about I have a way to plug in. If I'm at the office I just sit my laptop down and plug in. It's great.

The magsafe saved my butt tonight. I was giving my lecture and accidentally tripped on my power cable. Much much better then a 2500.00 macbook pro flying across the room.

So the current plan is hope my macbook pro lives until they run out of stock and stop refurbing them. Then hope that time is within my apple care time. Then hope my nvidia video fails and I get a free new macbook pro :)

I kid, I kid. I actually love my macbook and I hope nothing happens to it. I had problems adjusting at first, but I've worked most of that out and I wouldn't give it up for the world.

They better keep glass displays optional. In my line of work the glare would make it un-usable.
