DVI-I is a superset of DVI-A and DVI-D; if has has a DVI-D cable, it will work in either a D or I port.
As for why Apple didn't use a DVI-I port, I'm assuming because it wouldn't be of much use. DVI-I is only useful for when you have a DVI->VGA adapter to go with it, so you may as well just have a Mini-DVI->VGA adapter instead (and pay Apple's high prices, too! 😀).
Well all I will say is go to Monoprice and get a Mini dvi-HDMI and a HDMI to DVI-D (single link) it'll run you about $16. They have lifetime guarantees on there products and cheap as hell ^^. Where I got my Mini-display port to DVI-I (dual) $12. Much, much cheaper than apple store or other vendors still I think.
