dayum, I want so bad a 12" Powerbook. Such a small full featured notebook, with the typical slick Apple design, what more can you ask for?

LOL. Yeah. Any modern videocard on a Intel/AMD laptop will spank that Mac book graphics. Check out the GeForce FX for the laptops! Or the latest Radeon. They are faster than many desktop out there.

you dont buy a notebook to play video games. so you really dont need all that power per say. notebooks are/should be used for more educations purposes or work. not playing video games. if u want to do that get a real pc.

but the apple ibooks are so hot. i think they are alot better then the pc notebooks.

this summer i might buy one, depending on my job.

notebooks/laptops still have crappy battery life.

You'd think by now they come out with something better... but instead we get more powerful processors and graphics cards with a 2 and a half hour battery life... :disgust:

If you wanted a "desktop replacement" lappy, it's a pretty high priority... plus, it's nice to be able to play something like Neverwinter Nights, Morrowind, Warcraft3, or some other "slow" games.

Exactly. You don't waste $3K on a laptop just to surf the Web. Especially if you get a huge beautiful LCD. I'd definitely buy either a super powerful laptop, or a crappy one. Performance or nothing.

Desktop publishing? A good old Matrox Millenium II would be still perfect for Desktop publishing! 3D Design? Care to elaborate? And games? no way I wanna play games on my notebook.

notebooks are ment to be mobile. those super laptops with everything in them are like 7-8lbs. who the hell wants to carry that around. and for games? why do i want to play a game on a 15in lcd screen. way to small.

i guess some of us out grow games faster then others :) there are more importants things in life. dont get me wrong. i still play, but its not a high priority in life.

EDIT: i see you beat me to the weight first. :)

1. Desktop publishing - ok, I made this one up :D
2. 3d - Autocad, 3dMax, and other programs which rely on OpenGL acceleration for much better performance.
3. Games - that's right, many people like to play a game or two.

If you don't need a FAST PC, why not just buy a sub-Ghz laptop and use it as your main PC?

Don't get me wrong, I love to play games, just not on a notebook. Have fun while playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein while you are sitting in a train :p

I do need a fast PC, true, but for that, there's a Desktop. When I'm on the run, I want something light, small, etc.

Well, "desktop replacement" means it not really quite meant for ultimate portability in mind. A lot of the faster and more powerful notebooks with big screens, internal drives, etc are like you said, heavier and bigger. But the market does have 2 segments so you have the choice of going with an ultraportable or something that still portable but closer to a full desktop. If you only packup your lappy for infrequent trips, 7lbs isn't a big deal.

EDIT: the main complaint I get from Mac notebook users is lack of software selection... but that's just a symptom of switching to Apple products in general. If you want ultraportable, Sony Picturebook works too... a Transmeta??

The 17" PowerBook would be a Desktop Replacemant for me and it's not 7pounds.

nope. But for the money I can get a normal 12" ultra-portable x86 Notebook, I can get a Powerbook 12" which has the same features, PLUS nice style.

You can plug a keyboard and mouse into the laptop.... there is a guy that always goes to our LAN parties with his laptop.. aside from the smaller screen... it works perfect for him!!
