If they plan on making a console, this is a good idea. Buying EA means they could force fans of the Sims and sports to buy their console, or do without those very popular titles. If the next NFL game was only available on an Apple console which console do you think football fans will buy?

With the "quality" of the recent Madden games and the ingrained hatred/distrust of Apple for some, my guess would be Sega Genesis.

Haha..

If fear the "innovation" apple will come up with.

I don't know the last time I actually liked something from apple.

EA is a profitable company so it wouldn't be a bad move even purely as an investment, if they can get it at a good price. Apple is swimming in cash right now so they gotta invest in something. If they can force developers to make a Mac port of every EA game then even better. I don't particularly like Apple, but I wouldn't mind this because it would encourage multi platform game development and openGL.

apple already makes consoles, they just suck at video games. if apple were to produce a game console, it would be hideously expensive, just to keep from undercutting all other apple systems.

The same EA I've seen which has posted losses for the last 8 consecutive quarters?

Of all the companies to buy, EA is probably the last I would think Apple would want. EA is notorious for putting out 90% complete games...always lacking polish, finish.

IE, they are clear on the other side of the world from Apple development philosophy-speaking...not sure why Apple would want them.

It would, however, be a much prettier device than its competitors.

Um... Nintendo already owns the "small white plastic box" console market. Slapping an apple logo on a Wii does not a better console make.

tell that to the legions of automatons.

Maybe apple will take over EA and dictate all of its operations changing the way the company operates at every level forcefully, like what EA did to many developers. Except this time apple will likely have a positive influence on EA.

Are we talking about the same Apple? you mean the company that puts out over-priced garbage?

Over-priced yes. But it's typically not garbage.

i guess that's debateable

well, a lot of their stuff is quality, but it's the price/quality that makes them so shitty. i don't like the look and feel of any of their products, I find them to be useless in terms of functionality, for the most part, which in my mind is garbage.

but the build quality is generally quite good on their products.

Plus this..

Adami noted that there is chatter that Apple (AAPL Quote) is eyeing Electronic Arts(ERTS Quote) as a takeover target.
"Adami" is the notorious Fast Money man Guy Adami, whose reputation on predictions is...sketchy, at best. Though we have to note, this isn't a prediction, it's just "chatter".

Heh this actually reminded me of the quote from Kramer in that inside wall street clip about how its easy to pass off bs as truth about companies like apple because people want to believe it, then you can make some quick profit from the manipulation of the stock prices.

I know about 2 dozen die hard Madden fans, by die hard I mean have 2,000+ hours invested into every yearly release of it. They pre-order it every year. And have Madden parties where they get together and have tournies. They would definitely buy an Apple console no question if there was a Madden '11 that wasn't on Xbox or PS3. I would imagine there are plenty more like them. Madden fanatics are crazy. My GF is a Sims nuts, she pre ordered the 2nd one and every expansion pack. Between 1, 2 and the expansions. I couldn't even estimate how many thousands of hours she's invested in Sims. She would buy a Mac or an Apple console if that was the only thing that Sims 3 would be on.

the 2 examples I used don't represent the typical person, but there are a shit ton who would do anything they had to in order to play Madden or Sims. I honestly believe they could put out a $400 console that only plays Madden and it would sell pretty well. Madden fanatics are worse than WOW dudes in my opinion.

I don't think Apple can afford to buy EA at the price they would likely ask, if they were indeed thinking of selling.

Look at the whole Microsoft vs Yahoo thing.

Too many of you guys are PC users thinking like PC makers and not thinking like Apple thinks.

If Apple comes out with a new console it is not going to be one that is a little faster and a little better than the ones currently on the market, instead it will be something a little more revolutionary ala the Wii.

Use your imagination.
Apple uses iTunes and the iPod to dominate the digital distribution of music. The next logical step is the distribution of TV shows and movies, a market that has hardly even been touched. Apple has already tried to crack that market with the Apple TV but it hasn't really made much of an impact. Consumers haven't show much desire to buy a box that only allows you to play TV shows and movies.

But what if that same box was a game console as well??

So Apple buys EA, or a large enough share to dictate content, thus ensuring its new console has a steady stream of new and popular games.

And then they come out with a new version of the Apple TV that revolutionizes the game console market.

A system that plays videos games, but also allows you to download and watch movies and TV shows, has access to your iTunes library and also operates as a DVR system. Add an upscale DVD players to it and you have one box that does everything your multiple boxes do now.

Add motion control game controllers and you tap into the Wii dominated social gaming crazy.

And then add an app that allows your iPhone or iTouch to operate as a remote control for your new box.

It may be expensive, but if done right people will buy it.

Look at the whole Microsoft vs Yahoo thing.

EA has a market cap of less than $4 billion. Apple has about $29 billion in cash.

Yahoo was worth a lot more than EA.

It would be called the Playstation 3. Just as it is now.

Good, I hope they force EA to start developing for MAC OS's exclusively, so we don't have to deal with their BS DRM anymore in the PC market.

The only system I see as 'user upgradeable' is the Mac Pro, and a similarly configed PC costs 1/3 as much.

Sorry but if you really price it out you can't build a macpro cheaper (I tried).

EA is a publisher first and developer second. Buying them to make a Apple console is about like buying a oil company so you can make a new car. I doubt they are interested in the company for that reason. More so to get people more interested in the Mac. If you are going to make a console the worst thing you could do would be to rely on one publisher for the titles.
