Hell no, I'd probably wait for the refurb Wifi model to hit $599-ish.

I can see 128gb on the iPhone (I shoot a lot of photos/videos myself and it fills up quickly!), but what would you use that for on an iPad? Aside from maybe loading up a zillion movies for your kids for the car, I'm having a hard time seeing a use for that much memory on a tablet...between Dropbox, Google Drive, Plex, Netflix, MOG, Spotify, etc., what would people need 128 gigs on a tablet for?

Edit: Also your PM inbox is always full dude :D

Well, think about this, a 128GB retina mini that a photographer carries with them. Lighter and smaller than any laptop, with significantly better battery life. Throw in the card reader and 4G...

Other than that... big music libraries? Big movies libraries? I don't know.

I've actually been looking at an 11" MBA over a new iPad (still on iPad 1 haha). Then you get real apps, but with a physical keyboard and in roughly the same form factor. If they could do a Retina MBA, that'd be pretty awesome! I bet a Retina iPad Mini would be pretty awesome too.

I can see a large-storage phone mainly for photos/videos, but even a Retina Mini would be...awkward for taking photos with. You'd still look like a total goober taking pictures on an iPad Mini (and this is coming from a guy who mounts his iPhone on his fancy video gear lol). I always try not to laugh at weddings and stuff when people stand up and take pictures with their 10" iPads :biggrin: A Mini would be better, but an iPhone or iTouch would be less awkward in social settings.

I could see the Mini in like a studio photography setting for quickly approving shots and such, but still, that seems like it would be better suited for a streaming software setup. I dunno. Give me my 128gb iPhone without purple flare already :D

i think it would be even cheaper to buy a 128 gb sd card and an ultrabook with far better video editing possibilities :D

I actually paid about $1000 for my iPad (4th Gen 64GB LTE iPad, $829 + $100 for AppleCare). I really have no need for higher capacity idevices though. I have 40GB+ of music in the cloud which takes up about 1 or 2GB of space on any one of my devices. So I have a boat load of space. Pictures take up space, but that space is mainly being used on my wife's 64GB iPhone 5. She take A LOT of pictures but still has A LOT of space remaining on her device. I guess it's a good option for anyone needing the extra space, but I think it should just take the place of the 64GB model, and have the 32GB model be the smallest version offered.

Meh. Give us a higher rez iPad mini already.

This. My wife has the current mini and LOVES it! If they come out with a retina mini, I'd be the first one in line to trade up for the new version. It would be perfect then.

I wasn't suggesting using the Mini as the camera, but as a tool for the photographer to use. Much like how many of them carry laptops into the field, the mini can stand in for that in a lot of cases for quick edits and viewing and the like (is my understanding, I am not a photographer, I only just now got a d40).

I'm not a photographer, but the few I've conversed with have not expressed a desire to use an iPad as a field replacement for the laptop. I'm thinking that's because they would need to carry a laptop anyway, so adding the iPad would be just that, adding another device.

That said, I rented out my house for a TV shoot, and I saw one of the crew using the iPad for site pictures. He would take pix with the iPad just to get the layout and then use those pix as a guide for how to set up the shots later. I guess that saves a step of shooting with a cheap point and shoot and then transferring the pix to a laptop or iPad later. That's a completely different thing than shooting the primary shots on a camera and then transferring to an iPad though. All of their editing work was done on real computers.

Seems like a perfect job for a modern smartphone?

I hope this means they're going to eliminate the 16 GB model and bump everything else down $100 with the next iPad. The base model iPad and iPhone have both been 16 GB for way too long. Unfortunately 16 GB is probably enough for most people (unlike 8 GB when that was the base size for the iPhone), so I think Apple will continue to charge an extra $100 for 32 GB as long as they can.

I'm thinking he just needed a decent sized screen, and being able to take pictures with that screen (aka iPad) was a big bonus. 4.8" isn't good enough. Image quality probably didn't matter really.

Hmm, I wasn't sure how much actual work was done on their field laptops anyway, and I was considering the significantly smaller size and lower weight. Though I guess as just an intermediary device it doesn't make a lot of sense...

If the camera could somehow tether to the iPad and supported photostream, maybe that would work? I don't know enough about that sort of workflow.

Edit: Although I am a wee bit jealous of that guy's viewfinder haha

I guess that could provide some use, although with no ability to calibrate the display, color critical work would be out of the question.

My company has been considering replacing the laptops of the Field Service Engineers with iPads to run ServiceMax, but they were concerned that all of the service manuals and documentation would not fit locally on a iPad, and would have to explore a cloud-based solution. That would be problematic with inconsistent connectivity in the field.

From 16GB to 32GB = 16GB --> 100$ premium
From 32GB to 64GB = 32GB --> 100$ premium
From 64GB to 128GB = 64GB --> 100$ premium

Funny Apple math. Too bad they didn't just up the storage for each price segment, since flash storage nowadays is a lot cheaper than when iPad was introduced in 2010. Greedy bastards at Apple.

I may consider it again when Lightroom or Aperture has made its way onto the iPad.

For now, I don't feel like dropping close to a grand just to show my customers some photos.

But I'm not a professional photographer, so... who knows?

The CPU power in tablet ARM chips for the next couple of years is going to be too slow to make serious Lightroom or Aperture work a reality unless you want your battery to last only an hour or two. Plus, NAND read/write speeds are abysmal at about 20MB/sec, which is enough for a single RAW photo or 3-4 JPEGs. We'd need to see Apple start adopting SSD controllers in their SoC designs, and there's no pressure to do so now or for the next couple of years.

Wrong move. They should have cut all 16GB SKUs from production and had the 32/64/128 take up the $499/$599/$699 price points. That would have given consumers something to cheer about. We know they're charging $100 for $5-$10 worth of NAND, but at least throw us a bone once in a while?

A $799 128GB model is just Apple being Crapple; more of the same. Yawn.
