Apple iTV rumors send competitors scrambling...to copy Apple.

Pretty typical. For some reason, I foresee Samsung coming out with a similar set right after Apple launches their new Apple iTV, and then they'll claim Apple had nothing to do with their design. 🙄

Here's a thought, instead of ripping off Apple, why don't the other manufactures try and innovate on their own. Oh yeah, they can't. 🙄

There is no proof of any such nonsense. All I see is an apple douche saying he thinks others may be copying. Yet again, apple fanboiys circulating the interwebs with stupidity. Yeah, all the shit on the atv apple invented, NOT.

Heres a thought, instead of claiming you invented something, INVENT something. Its seems all apple does is take other devices and apps and squish them into one and tells you what to do with it. No invention there

This can only be seen as good news for Google.

Google TV has been a flop so far as a add-on accessory. Now Google has dozens of TV manufacturers lining-up to integrate Google TV and Android into their HDTVs.

Sure, and when Samsung comes out with a TV with an Apple knock off interface you'll say, Apple didn't invent anything, we already had TVs and we already had interfaces. They just put them together. Anyone can do that, unfortunately they only do it AFTER Apple does it first. Odd. Hey, Apple didn't invent tablets either. They just showed the world how a tablet SHOULD be done. Funny how the other manufactures started using that model AFTER Apple released their version.

In all honesty, I'm pretty skeptical of Apple's venture in the TV market. They better bring their A game if they want to be a success in this market. I don't know what they have up their sleeves, but it better be something special.

My TV has a few apps in it that I never use, netflix being one of em. I just use my ps3 or 360 for those apps as they work better/faster.

I'm sure Apple isn't coming out with a TV with just more apps. That would be pointless. Rumor has it that Siri will play a key part in Apple's new iTV. What I would LOVE to see is Apple start an IP based distribution system where it cuts out the local cable companies and streams your TV content through your existing internet connection to the iTV. This give the system direct access to content which will enable you to interact with Siri by saying things like, "record channel 5 at 8:00pm," or "Go to Comedy Central," or "when do the Cowboys play?" You could even say "switch to PS3" and it will switch to your PS3 input. That would be pretty awesome.

Did I mention I hate remotes?

I hope it has whisper mode. I can see it now, husband watching TV, wife asleep, "SIRI, DONKEY PORN NOW!" wife wakes up, divorce ensues.

Apple doesn't invent anything, but everyone seems to only implement their ideas AFTER Apple. Case in point, iPod, iPhone, and most notably the iPad. I have my doubts about iTV, but I'm sure the fanboys will be ready to say Apple sucks whether or not the device is a success/failure because they weren't "first".

I don't know of any "first" iteration of any device/gadget being a pleasant experience. Just like the mp3 player/smartphone/tablet has gone through transformations to become a pleasant experience, the next step is the TV. The TV market is up for grabs for any manufacturer to capitalize on and I'm sure there are many who are racing to grab that potential market.

Oh, it's even worse than that. Since Siri works by uploading what you say to Apple's servers, what you'll get is a visit from the police. Even you ask for something as tame as "Girls Gone Wild" all you'll get is a lecture from Siri about how you shouldn't misuse an Apple product for such deviant purposes.

More seriously, no one uses the Kinect voice recognition features on the Xbox 360. I don't see voice control being a big feature for TVs. It's a lot quicker to just to push a button on remote control.

Forget the Apps, I want to pay a monthly fee to be able to stream anything (and I mean ANYTHING) out of the iTunes movie and TV show catalog. When it comes to recent material, they put Netflix to shame.

If they pull that off, I can finally cancel Netflix and my Cable subscription.

Yes that too. I use PLEX for local media so it would be nice to just have an app for it.

That's because Netflix charges a cheap monthly fee for access everything, while iTunes charges per movie and TV show. If Apple introduces a monthly fee you're not going to get anything recent. Content providers aren't going to allow it because they would make much less money that way.

Really though, if I could get on demand, current episodes of shows (including premium content) that would be something I'd be willing to pay up to $50 a month for. Almost 5x what Netflix charges.

I have *never* paid money to watch current shows unless they are one of like 4 that are on Netflix. I've always waited for them to hit DVD/BR release or caught them on the network sites for streaming.

I'm sure I'm not alone. I'm positive there is a growing demand for carte blanche, premium streaming services. I'd like to see some serious consumer studies done on this to see how many people really are paying money to download current seaon episodes vs. what they'd be willing to pay on a monthly subscription basis for unlimited content access.

If one person out of 10 is downloading $30 a month worth of episodes vs. 10 people out of 10 paying $30 - $50 a month for unlimited access...which one is really better for the content providers?

Yah, I'm not sure $50 a month would be enough to convince content providers to give you access to everything on iTunes right now. It would either have to raise the average revenue per user (and so you'd be better of buying individual shows) or it would have to raise the number of users, without lowering average revenue too much. I don't think you're going to see a lot people willing to pay that much. It's a lot more than HBO costs, and that includes HBO on Demand.

The part that kills me is that TVs have been adding these somewhat pointless and redundant apps because it's inexpensive feature that people buy. These additions have been pretty mild from a tech standpoint.

When HDMI was starting to get popular I was starting in the AV industry and all I could think was "Why isn't this all cat5e cabling? This could all be IP based..."

When TVs were adding ethernet ports all I could think was "Why wont they take command over IP or serve up some sort of web interface?"

When iTV comes out people will be fighting to give their money for one and somehow I don't see retailers be all that upset about finally being able to sell a TV with margin in it (and most likely price locked to boot!)

I also hate remotes and just hope someone will figure out great ways to integrate iTV (or any TV) into homes. Have your TV be your thermostat, control you blinds, and do all the other neat integration tricks by voice command. No more crazily expensive AMX systems with clunky interfaces and miles of serial cables running a home! Hurray!
 
Pie in the sky thought....

It get's an integrated HD (flash or spindle) and have a full blown DVR functionality setup. The guide & recording setup is iCloud published so your iDevice can manage all of your recordings. And even bigger would be the ability to stream your recorded content back to your iDevice over the web.

None of this is new or revolutionary. Tivo and slingbox have been doing it for years, but not with the integration or access from the market share of the iOS devices.

there's really no incentive for aapl to move into TV's, since it's such a commodity market. And you don't manipulate TV's really that much. you manipulate like a PS3 or apple tv. Maybe they might make an AppleTV that can actually play games? That might fly.
