Apple is slapping PC users around with their 30" LCD!

my big screen, is nothing like you have obviously seen because my viewing angle is way better than any just plain old big screen rear projection. do some research fool. my tv is brand new. and will blow anything you have in your whole house out of the water.

as for lcds... they just plain old suck.

Hehe, that's funny. I haven't updated that page in FOREVER.

That's not a bad TV, and not a bad price. I'll DEFINITELY choose the 30" Apple display for my games and PC work, but that HDTV might not be a bad compromise between DLP and Plasma for movies. I'll check it out at CC next week and see how bad the viewing angles are. If it still has issues with viewing angles, I'm going to give it IMMEDIATE thumbs down.

 
Nice display, but you would think that for $3k apple would throw in the capability for height adjustment. Like I would want to destroy such a thing of beauty with a monitor riser lol. Give it a few more months and there will be other, more healthy alternatives for PC users I bet - DM

Samsung 40" for PC (403T) - $5599 - max digital res 1280x768 with a 23ms response time = CRAP

Now what didn't I know? Big LCDs have been around for awhile. 30" 16ms 2560x1600 res LCDs have not.
 
Sony 21" G500. I got it awhile ago and I'm looking for the perfect LCD. I REALLY like the Apple display, but I don't have a gaming card to go with it (currently have a 6800GT but it isn't dual link). 🙁 And I'm not going to pay $1200 for a workstation card. If nVidia (or ATI) can somehow get dual link implemented with SLI, I would LOVE to get it.

This Apple screen is not a gaming display. The high res basically tells you it's not. This is a workstation LCD. That's why workstation card works with it.

For gaming I rather have something like Panasonic AE700 projector and 6800 Ultra and about 100" of screen in the basement. Sure resolution is lower but you're not going to notice it sitting 14 feet away from the screen. The experience of gaming on this kind of setup will be far superior to gaming experience on the Apple LCD.

Apple's high end setup with the display is with a 6800Ultra dual link card. Last I checked that wasn't a workstation card. The problem comes in on the PC side as they only have workstation cards that support it. So no, it is not just a workstation LCD. It can definitely be a gaming LCD. The Dell 2001FP has the same pixel response time as the Apple. It's funny how alot of those people who bought their Dell LCD are using it for gaming and have reported little to no ghosting. Hmmm. Just because it supports a crazy resolution doesn't automatically make it a workstation LCD. My 21" G500 supports 2048x1536. Does that make it a workstation monitor? I didn't think so. This thing (Apple LCD) is a BAD ASS gaming LCD AND a great workstation LCD. 🙂

And I will be at a MAXIMUM of two feet away from it. It's going on my computer desk, not out in the living room. 🙂

Eug posted a link to the MOST l33t setup I've even seen. That thing is just plain awesome! If he had two 6800Ultra running in SLI (that supported dual link), it would be the most bad ass PC ever (well, under $20,000).

The reason I said it's workstation LCD and not gaming display is not because only workstation card works on the PC side. I'm fully aware of the 6800U dual link DVI on the Apple side. Even if 6800U dual link SLI existed on the PC side, I would still say it's poor gaming LCD. The resolution is simply too high to get playable FPS on the native res on most newer games and many games simply don't support that high resolution. If you don't run the games at the native resolution, what's the point of running it non-native and have it look worse than lower res native screen? You will be better off with 1600x1200 or 1920x1200 native screen.

It's nice workstation LCD and good alternative to the pricier IBM T221 but just like the T221, it's not a good gaming LCD.

The person that owned that LCD said he could play UT2004 at its native resolution really well. And the ONLY reason Doom 3 wouldn't play well at the native res is because his card wasn't built for gaming. If you can play a game a 2560x1600, there is no need for AA. I suspect if a video card can run Doom 3 at 4xAA well (6800Ultra SLI), it should pose no problems playing a game at its native res with no AA. Once video cards come out that support that high res, will the Apple 30" be magically transformed from a workstation LCD to a gaming LCD?

The 6800 Ultra on the Mac side is arguably a workstation card. (Remember, Macs aren't the best gaming machines. Gaming with a fast G5 can be great, but if you buy a machine strictly for gaming, you're better off with a P4 or something.) No, it's not a Quadro, but I'm told for most people doing 3D it's a good substitute, since Apple controls the drivers. (Most of the differences between a Quadro and the corresponding consumer gaming card have to do with the drivers.) Indeed, some of the 3D stuff at Pixar is done on G5 Macs.

Actually, at all the Mac geek shows, Apple demos Final Cut Pro and Shake and stuff on G5 Power Macs running dual 30" screens. That is truly awesome. A $400 video card pushing dual 30" screens. :wine:

The person that owned that LCD said he could play UT2004 at its native resolution really well. Apple 30" will probably never be a good gaming LCD display. Until the day arrives when pretty much all games support that native res and the videocard is powerful enough to drive it at enough FPS, it will never be . But that day will likely never arrive as newer game engines will always require more power and developers won't bother using high enough textures to make a difference at that res. If by some miracle this day arrives in the future, there will be better technology and better bigger displays available. So it will be pointless to buy this for gaming now when it sucks for gaming or for the future when better panels will be available. As workstation display, this display is beautiful. As a gaming LCD, it's less than optimal.

Sure. I just told you it plays the latest games at the native res. Why do people buy a $400-500 video card and a nice monitor for? To play the original Doom? If it plays Doom3, UT2004 and HL2 well at the native res, then it's definitely fit to be called a gaming LCD. You however can still call it a workstation LCD all the live long day though. 😉
 
Coudlnt one just buy an apple with the6800gt that has the DUal Dual DVI, and then take the video card from the Apple and put it in a PC, or do the Apple 6800's have special drivers?
 
The 6800U-DL is a special card that works only with Apple systems. Perhaps if someone that had a G5 wrote a BIOS editor that ran on that platform and flashed the card to a 6800U PC compatible BIOS, MAYBE it would work. There is also a good chance that they would end up with a $600 paperweight too!

Quadro 3000's are available for ~ $500 on ebay. In games they offer performance similar to 5900FX cards which isn't particulary great for the newest games. However, the monitor scaling is superb at 1280x720 and games look pretty nice at this resolution on this screen.

In the next year, expect other manufacturers to catch up with panels this size, as well as mainstream next gen video cards in the consumer "gaming" category to have DVI ports capable of higher resolutions. Then the choice will be obvious.
