Hey everyone so I finally got my ipad 2 and im actually really enjoying it a lot. I have one concern though about the speakers. I notice that the speakers are kinda muffled and have a little bit of bass but when i put my hand behind where the speaker is located, the sound has more treble and sounds a lot better and louder. Has anyone else notice that? Thanks and sorry if it sounds like a dumb question!

I think that's how it's designed lol.

Yea I noticed something similar to this on my iPad 2 as well.

The speakers are one of the weakest points of an iPad IMHO, and just putting something to bounce the sound forward as you did is a big improvement.

I've always assumed that the speakers were so bad in the iPad because they didn't want to deal with positional audio. If you put your speakers on the bottom of the device when held in portrait mode, and then you turn it to landscape, both of your left and right speakers are now on the left (or right) of the device. Your audio positions are now completely off.

The only way to solve this is to actually ship the tablet with 3 speakers in separate corners of the device and simply reconfigure the speaker setup based on the orientation of the tablet. The configuration would make it so whichever speaker is on the left and has a corresponding right speaker would be given the left channel and the speaker on the right would be given the right channel.

Yeah, the sound would sound really good if you bounce it toward you as mentioned.

Otherwise, it'll play in the other direction, and it'll feel as if it's coming from you instead of toward you.

On a side note, iPad 2 audio chip is quite good (when you plug headphones in)... compared to other devices, that is. I haven't had extended time with the 4S yet, but I don't doubt that it is just as good or better.
