Apple iBook with built in Airport & Linksys Network Everwhere Router

Hi:

I have a Network Everywhere router and trying to get it to work with an Apple iBook with built in Airport. The Airport see the wireless network, but when put in the WEP key, it is unable to connect. It tells me that "An Unexpected Error Occured While Trying to Connect to the Network."

Any ideas on how to fix?

UPDATE

OK, the iBook is using Mac OS 9.1, so there is no pulldown menu.

When I turn off WEP encryption and broadcast the SSID, I can surf the internet with the iBook.

But when I turn on WEP and enter the WEP password, get the unable to connect message.

I'm not quite sure what you mean.

I put in the WEP key in the "password" box and hit "connect", but it is unable to connect.

If you're using the latest version of OS X, there should be a drop down box with 3 options: wep password, wep key (hex), and wep key (ascii). My descriptions might be a bit off, not positive.

If you're putting in the hex key, you have to make sure you have hex selected in the drop down. If you're using the password/passphrase, make sure you have password selected in the drop down box.

I've never set up wireless on OS9.

You might need to preface the key (in hex) with a "$".

Yeah, I've been reading around, if if it's hex, then precede the key with "$", but if it's ascii, then put quotes around the key.

How do I know if I'm using hex or ascii?

Very often those Apple Airport cards have incompatible encryption algorithms with 3rd party routers. Sometimes a simple firmware upgrade on the router can fix the issue but a lot of times not. For best compatibility, get an Apple Airport Base-station although I've had good luck with Netgear wifi APs and Apple cards.

I believe that is bunk, please provide proof.

It's just been my experience setting up a few wireless Mac LANs using various routers trying to save a few bucks by not buying apple basestations.

I got it to work by adding a "$" in front of my WEP key.

In my exsperience with both major versions of Mac airport cards and various other wireless equipment, that it all works.

Ok you try getting a USB Macwireless interface on Beige and B&W G3s running OS 9.2.2 with Linksys wifi routers. Perhaps there's a new driver out by now that works but I even had the top level tech guys at Macwireless stumped on that one and was able to return and get a full refund of over 30 units. I've also had issues where certain Mac firmware revisions prevented PCI wireless cards to work. Since their firmware was already the latest and none of the older ones work any better, we were stuck. Ended up using D-Link ethernet wireless bridges.

Like I said, Apple products work just fine with non-apple wireless stations.
