I've sworn off Dells. I don't know what the quality is like these days, but in the past, Dell laptops weren't so well designed or well built. The main draw of Dell laptops is cost. If I got a Pentium M it'd be an IBM or something. But fortunately I have a 1 GHz PowerBook Titanium with slot-load DVD burner. 😀
 
Damn that was a surprise! Everything I wanted in a new iBook speedbump was included. G4; slot-loading combo drive across the line; USB 2.0; Bluetooth. What sucks is I'd only consider a 12" iBook and an 800MHz G4-only is sad. It should have got a 933MHz chip with the 14" laptops getting 933MHz and 1GHz chips. I'm tempted to upgrade from my current iBook but I know if I hold out just a bit longer that the G5 Powerbooks will be out soon! A G4 iBook can only stir up more demand for a G5 Powerbook. I think I'll wait.

Can't blame you there dude. I my self waiting for the G5 to come to their books. Only thing sucks thoe because the G5 so new I expect it to be in the 2k range. At least the G4 line of books would come down some ... maybe 100 bucks, then I would prob grab 14inch Ibook.

I expect to pay around $2500 for a new 15" PowerBook G5 in 2004. Or if I'm feeling poor, maybe I'll wait until 2005. (I have a 1 GHz TiBook right now.)
 
oh splat.. i didn't even notice the slot load across the board... shoot... such a nice deal then... i wouldn't mind the 800mhz g4... hehe. altho.. aren't the powerbook's lcds much better... it sure seems so on my friends 12" powerbook and roommates 15" (and his dad's 17".. heh).

It seems the PowerBook 12" and the iBook 12" screens are identical.

Screen quality: 15" > 17" >>> 12" > 14"
(The 15" and 17" are pretty close, but those two blow all the others away.)
 
do you know for a fact they use the same screen? mine sure looks crappier than my friends 12" powerbook :/ sure, mine was refurbished...but they had to replace the lcd since it died.

I don't know for a fact, but I've seen them both in the same store. Looked the same to me, which would make sense.
 
Yeah it's kinda freaked on how they charge so much for newer products. It's not like much is going to be differ in the make of the new g5 books. Even then they would not need to charge so much but that's apple for you and they always be that way. It's why pick from the bottum and even the bottum is dang a lot.

Its going to be a long time till a G5 laptop ever appears. The thermal considerations are too extreme.

What they eventually do will probably be similar what intel did with the mobile P4.. Its basically a P3 with
some P4 core and bus enhancements.

If you want Mac, go with the G4 iBook. They are damn nice machines and 10.3 finally brings the software
up to par with Windows XP for application performance. Another thing missing here is that the FSB is finally
133mhz across the board. This makes a big difference in performance as well.. The 500mhz and some 600's had a 66 mhz FSB, while 600 through 900 was all 100mhz. The G4 is just a G3 with altivec.. Almost no other differences.

I believe that the iBooks (g3/G4) have the exact same LCD as the 12" Powerbook. I though I read some place that it is made by Samsung.

 
They already use the entire case as a heatsink for their G4 processors and the G5 runs hotter...so, it'll be a little while.

Huh, the P4-M core is exactly the same as a desktop Northwood "A", nothing to do with a P3. You mean Pentium-M?

Jobs has said before the end of 2004. I suspect it will use a die shrunk 90 nm G5.
