Best Buy appears to be sending surveys to customers getting feedback on potential new products and services something that virtually every consumer-facing company does on a regular basis but one thing stood out this time around: the very first product in this survey that Best Buy asks about is the oft-rumored Apple iTV, identified here as the "Apple HDTV." The big box wants to know how you feel about it based on some proposed promotional verbiage which boasts that "Apple finally reinvents what a TV can do," saying that it'll run iOS, support iCloud, be controllable from an iPhone or iPad, and have access to Netflix, YouTube, and Flickr in other words, it's an Apple TV wrapped in an actual television set, exactly as you'd expect.

Slightly stranger, though, is that Best Buy says it'll have an "iSight" camera a brand Apple hasn't actively used in some time for its webcams and that it'll be ready for Skype, which probably isn't the way Cupertino would want to position the TV's video call capabilities with FaceTime on deck. Best Buy pegs the set at 42 inches and slaps a $1,499 price tag on it, a fairly hefty premium over models from top tier manufacturers in the same size class; even many 46-inch models retail for less.

$ 1500 for a 42" tv is pretty damn steep but I'm interested in seeing more about this. It was a given Apple was coming out with something like this seeing as Google TV is getting integrated in tv's as well now.

A 42" TV isn't a mobile device, so I'm punting this over to ATA

I still think Apple should integrate all of this into a box, maybe the current AppleTV. People don't replace their TVs all that often and it'll be really expensive if its an all in one unit.

Google TV? That was DOA so I don't really seeing that being anything big unless somehow someone can get the tv networks to play nice.
 
I think it's someone at BB guessing, Apple doesn't test consumer reaction like this.

Particularly referencing Skype, Apple has Facetime....

Yeah it makes more sense for Apple to make an "Apple TV on steroids" that has full blown iOS running on it, rather than a TV. People don't upgrade their TVs once a year.

I just want updated AppleTV with current iPod Touch internals. Not some overpriced TV from Apple. I like my cheap Vizio TV just fine. This rumor is BS.
 
No way in hell I'd pay $1500 for a 42" TV. Make big improvements to a separate Apple TV box, maybe I'd be interested.

Sadly, I paid almost that for my 42". It was a long time ago if I remember right, I got it when I got my first big boy job in 05/06, maybe a little off on that though. But seeing 50"+ TV's now for less than $800 makes me sick now.

Give the trolling a rest.

If Apple could soup up their current apple tv for $100, I'd buy that immediately. A full HDTV would be a harder sell considering how cheap TVs are now.
 
I've got an AppleTV that I paid $90 for. For streaming movies from Netflix and through itunes it works great. But for $500 I bought a 46" plasma TV with netflix, hulu, amazon, pandora, and a decent DLNA app that works well too.

No way I'd pay a $1000 premium for that functionality with an Apple logo on it.
 
$1500 will buy OLED or IZGO screen and maybe 3D as well. they had OLED TV's at CES this year but no word on price.

for me to pay that much apple would have to have a good itunes subscription so that i can cancel cable and stream it all
 
1. $1500. lol. 42" Sharp for $329.

2. Built-in AppleTV = fail. In a year or two, are you going to have to buy a new TV because iOS 6 won't run on older hardware? And what about the zillions of existing televisions? I'm definitely not trading in my projector for a 42" TV :awe:

3. iSight: I'm curious as to how they would approach the Webcam situation. Having a fixed webcam is a Bad Idea. I support Lifesize equipment at work, which is has an HD cam on a PTZ mount so you can zoom & swivel it wherever you want.

Maybe we'll get a Retina display 😀
