The heatsink is humungous, but very cool design (pun intended). Linky. The air is drawn in through the front with one set of fans, through the heatsink, and blown out the back with another set of fans.

Is it just me or does that case look even fuglier than all of the other apple cases (And those ones were pretty fruity...)?

I dunno, I like it. Those gallery pix are more for the innards, but don't seem to do the external appearance justice. See these pix for a better look at the outside:

Thats funny, I don't think the pictures do any of it justice :)

I'd rather have one of mac wiz-kids from the picture sitting on my desk, but don't take that the wrong way ;)

Are the people's reaction here just automatically negative because its a Mac? If that case was for a PC, people would swoon all over it. But since its a Mac.....

Honestly, I think its a cool looking case. Kinda retro, industrial look. But very classy looking. Maybe Apple can paint it different colors but I like it the way it is. I won't be surprised though if the look will be cloned by aftermarket PC case manufacturers.

Hmmm. The system pictured offers dual-DVI ports, and I'm almost certain the card inside is from ATi (looking at the HS/L-shaped memory pattern).

The case and parts look very nicely fit together. I think the new G5 cases are uglier than the G4 ones though. IMO, the best looking Mac was the G4 Cube.

Thanks for the link Eug.

My first reaction to the case was WTF is that? I'm so used to Apple designing very cosmetic looking cases that for them to go stripped down utilitarian was a shock. But now that the surprise has worn off I like the case. It's simple, very functional, purpose built and very thought out. All though I am worried about how much dust is gonna end up inside the case.

just for those who don't know, ADC is basically DVI but also carries USB and power to connect to apples LCDs. Apple's LCD are powered by the computer and contain a USB hub.

Tabb I have no idea about 970 vCore. for G4 it varies with speed. Because of the markets Motorola is in they release different grade/spec version of their procs in order to satisfy design power limits.

Apple has some god info on their new chip and system architecture here: http://www.apple.com/g5/. There are some *good links* at the top of that page for; architecture, execution core, and IBM fabrication process.

IBM has PR photos (some geek funny) up.

http://www-3.ibm.com/chips/photolibrary/photo10.nsf/WebViewNumber?OpenView&Start=66&Count=50&Pervasive

You can catch a great die photo here: http://www-3.ibm.com/chips/photolibrary/pervasive/88.jpg. Click on it if your browser auto-sizes images, it's 1517x2100.

Check out the artistic 970 die "cityscape", http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=10204.

They've also posted tech docs: http://www-3.ibm.com/chips/techlib/techlib.nsf/products/PowerPC_970_Microprocessor.

Comparision article between G5 and G4, http://maccentral.macworld.com/news/2003/06/24/compare/.

IBM is very agressive about becoming a force in CPU production and design. (2 seperate articles.)
The firm said that the Power 5 servers will offer four times performance over existing servers using its Power 4 chip.

A SURVEY OF market shares for different firms that manufacture chip designs shows that IBM Microelectronics is beginning to show its teeth.

In this video Apple says they have already built prototypes for the next generation of PPC processors.

Ars has a few CPU papers which are very highly regarded, and very readable for the noob, which also cover the 970.
