Apple finally released a hardware fix to the iPhone 4

As far as I care ... if you spend money on an iPhone 4 and these issues are actually issues, you can not afford an iPhone 4. People needing a phone for busienss don't need a new iPhone immediately and if they do, they are not very savvy busienssman.

Quite possibly the stupidest post of the year? 🙂

The good folks at Droid took notice of this invention and didn't want their users to be left out...

I own a droid and like my droid, but I'd be lying if I said it was without issue. I love android and will continue to support the platform, but choice is good and iPhone 4 changed the game enough to make forward facing cameras a base requirement, and I'm ok with that!

I own a droid as well too, and yeah it has issues as well (OS issues, not hardware issues). I am not pro or con apple anything. I considered an iphone as well when I was looking for a new cell, but decided on the droid instead. I think the reception problem *is* a real problem, but when you adopt something on day one of it's release you should expect problems.

Well, the reception issue should have been resolved in testing - I'm not saying apple is without blame. But I think it's kinda funny that there are a ton of people who are up in arms about the problem yet they obviously don't even own the product! But issues always come up and it's the PR department's job to spin issues, regardless if you're Toyota or Microsoft or Apple.

And I love my droid - I even like the keyboard! But, let's be honest, Android 2.x looks a little dated and the camera is sub par compared to i0S4. But I have complete faith in Google and eagerly look forward to gingerbread and the future of 'droid. I love Apple's place in the marketplace, it's forcing big G to up it's game!

I don't think people are complaining for the sake of complaining. If you buy a 200-300$ (500-600 if w/o contract) phone, you expect it to...be a phone? I haven't upgraded to the iphone 4 yet because of the issues, so i'm stuck with my 3g for a while. I do feel like apple should at least give away free bumpers to the people that already bought it, like when apple gave a 100$ gift cert to the early adapters of the original iphone (i ended up spending it on the 3g...but...).

Well, the reception option should have been resolved in testing

I agree with this, but the one thing that I don't understand... all the people who bought this phone and are now complaining about the issues; why didn't you just return the phone??? You should have at least 15-30 days to return a product, especially if it has an obvious manufacturer defect.

I'm sorry, but I don't think you understand the whole NEW 2 YEAR CONTRACT thing attached to the phone...

Yes I do, but typically you get at least 15 days to use the device before you are stuck. I just signed a contract for my droid and in the contract it basically states if you are not satisfied with the product, it can be returned within 15 days. I imagine most other providers have similar deals.

It's obviously a bigger problem than you think, since a class action suit has been filed against apple...

http://gizmodo.com/5577010/first-iphone-4-class-action-suit-filed-against-apple-and-att

LOL, you have to be a fucking moron to think that a class action lawsuit indicates anything besides how greedy and 'me-first' our society is.

Anyone can start a class action lawsuit. Lawyers start class action lawsuits all the time so they can be the first 'on the bus' so to speak (so they will get paid the most).

I wonder if google will copy the antenna issues and add it to the droid as well? They seem to do it with every other feature from the iphone...

Nice attempt, but actually the 1st phone with a bad reception problem like this belonged to Google with their N1, G1 whatever the hell it was called. They finally owned up to it being a legit problem, and their solution for N1 owners was to... buy an Incredible or some other Android phone! But they didn't catch nearly as much flack as Apple, because Google can do no wrong.

Saw this story in this morning's newspaper:

"US Iphone 4 users suffer low data rates
Another software fix is on the way

ITHINGS MAKER Apple has suffered yet another embarrassment, as it appears that a software glitch has left Iphone 4 owners suffering terrible data speeds.

The fault lies with AT&T, the US mobile operator Apple jumped into bed with years ago, and telecoms equipment manufacturer Alcatel Lucent. The problem affects Iphone 4 handsets, which support the 3G high-speed uplink packet access (HSUPA) protocol. It makes accessing websites, emails and other Internet content arduous affairs.

AT&T was quick to calm fanbois fears that they would find it harder than usual to post spurious comments on articles critical of Apple by saying that only those who connect to AT&T's network and are routed through Alcatel Lucent equipment are affected. Apparently that is around two percent of its subscribers, but that includes all Iphone 4 users in the US.

A spokesman for AT&T told Reuters that bandwidth is "cut to a maximum of 384 kilobits per second from a potential maximum of 5.67 gigabits per second." That's a pretty impressive cut, especially given that the HSUPA standard has a theoretical maximum of 5.67 megabits - not gigabits - per second.

While the Iphone 4 is one of only a few devices that support HSUPA, a protocol invented by Nokia, it is yet another problem for fanbois who have spent a great deal to get an Iphone 4 that now cannot receive voice or data all that well.

As is standard practice for all Iphone 4 related faults, AT&T is saying that the problem can be solved through applying a software update, without any need for serious network changes. Apparently AT&T is the only operator to be affected by the dodgy software in Alcatel Lucent's 3G cellular wireless telecoms gear.

AT&T has not provided a date when it will patch its equipment, so Iphone 4 users will simply have to chalk up another hit from Jobs' Mob. µ

Looks like this one is AT&T's fault not Apple's, but it only affects the iPhone4...at this time...

Haha, I don't think you guys realize how big a problem this actually is. I have friends who aren't tech savvy at all and never read internet updates and such about iPhones. Yet, they go out like drones and buy it cause it is cool.

Every one of them has posted on facebook about their phone dropping calls and they have no idea why. Yet, they continue using the thing cause it is cool.

what I want to know is, why the fuck didn't anyone at Apple catch this problem? It doesn't seem to be an isolated issue at all. Doesn't Apple take their phones out for field testing, or is their grip on prototypes that damn hard that they won't let anyone even touch the phones?

Wondering the same thing myself. Honestly, the thing is called an IPhone. It's distributed pretty much exclusively with a phone contract. So what's the first thing they test the shit out of to make sure it works? Me thinks making calls would be a good start.
