I've never owned one and don't give a crap personally but--

Does this not leave a hole in the the lineup? Are there any other MP3 players that can hold 160GB of music locally? The touch still only holds up to 64GB and costs 300 bucks. Zune is dead.

I would think for people that want strictly an MP3 player that can hold a massive amount of music (esp high bit rate users) there is nothing better than the classic.

It does create a hole, although I think Apple is also acknowledging a practical reality: dedicated MP3 players are on the decline, and streaming music is growing. A lot of the remaining would-be iPod classic buyers are the "I only rip in lossless" types who wouldn't be happy until Apple had a 1TB model.

I can't think of a single person I know that cares about the iPod anymore.

128GB mSD cards take care of excess storage needs.

I still like my iPod a lot. Though I'd like to replace it completely with my phone, storage and battery and "do I care if it gets messed up" all play a role as well.

Anyone who really needs one can pick up a used one. It's not as though all iPods everywhere will disappear. Eventually I expect an update to the touch that brings it up to 128 GB, which should alleviate some of the problem. Given enough time there will probably be a 256 GB version available as well.

Otherwise most people aren't even using iPods anymore now that phones have become capable of storing most of our music or we've moved to using streaming services and there's no need for us to even store the music on our device.

I would imagine the only reason Apple kept it around for this long is because they still had inventory to get rid of.

I have the 5th gen one, which I still really like. Was actually a junkyard find that I repaired. Those things were pretty legendary. I like having a stand alone device that will handle lossless files.

iPhones don't support SD cards. Apple wants an extra $300 for 128 GB of internal storage :(

I use my iPod 120 GB almost daily, so I'll be changing brands when it finally dies.

They pretty much realized they can push 128GB flash-based smartphones for a premium price, so that doesn't leave much room for the Classic iPods. Dedicated mp3 players are starting to become a very niche market, so it's not surprising they are exiting that area.

iPhone users will pay for 128GB iPhones. Android users can use mSD cards.

Good luck getting any sort of decent integration with an Android phone and a car head-unit.

I use my iPods when exercising or working outside. A touch screen is too much of a pain for that.

Too bad about the classic. As of today, the best iPod interface that was ever created, the clickwheel, is now gone.
