Apple designs an automobile

i like ipod's interface. same goes for osx. its hard to argue that apple is the champion when it comes to form and functionality when talking about user interface.

what if a car company takes the initiative and asks them to give a lending hand in designing the interface.
now a days most newer models only have a better engine(in most cases) or something along those lines. i would like to see refinement in the user interface. i would like to see simplicity. BMW tried the iDrive thing...it was an ATTEMPT at the step in the right direction but the whole concept was executed VERY poorly. with apple's products...less is more...you still get the same functionality.

even if the car company doesn't want to go to apple...fine...but still, why cant they do it themselves(refine the user interface).

/random thought

not seeing it. However, I wouldn't mind them working on a Nav/radio/mp3 player. The design of the car is better left to car guys.

what now?

im not talking about the exterior, the power, or performance. just talking about how i dont like so many buttons everything.

i would not mind an ipod like control for my cd player/radio in my car
i guess i should've specified that i wasn't talking all of the interior. just some parts of it

and if you get the base model (shuffle) there is no tach or speedo, you have to guess.

i bet it'd look bulbous and round... comes with a flower in a vase on the dash... and all the girls would gulp it up

and i bet they'd call it a beetle

hahah, though thats a funny idea. since the speedo is absolutely essential and tacho for the ricers amongst us....i doubt those would be taken out.
i lack any creativity so i wish i could point out what kind of changes i would like to see...but since i'm not...i cant.
but i do know that i want to see changes in the way the driver interacts with the car

iDrive failed BECAUSE it didn't have a lot of buttons. The fewer buttons, the more you have to rely on the interface. That's fine for an mp3 player (to an extent) but NOT for a car. I want to have a button for all my presets, volume control, seek, etc, and I want just as many controls for AC. I do NOT want some damn knob I have to use to manuever through an interface to control multiple functions.

this is where assumption comes into play on my part...but given the chance i am sure apple would still be able to provide ease of use for lets say your radio or cd player. perhaps the same click wheal type thing where you go half circle to do a seek? i dont know, as im not the most creative of the bunch.

and each person has their own preference. when i am in the car, i dont play with the controls every other second. i have my presets, and i have a cd in there. so the only controls i use are volume, cd track change/pause, FM/AM radio

and what about having the same type of buttons that were on the last gen ipod before everything integrated into the wheel. i wouldn't mind using that in my car. yea it would drive up the cost of the car but hell...no car that i know of....including mercedes, lex, etc have those touch sensitive buttons.

Here's an idea:

Apple designs interface for radio, removing most of the buttons and replacing them with a rotary wheel thing.

Many people die from not watching the road but fiddling with the scroll wheel thing.

Apple pays out billions, Apple folds.

Hmmm.....

The last thing we need is to encourage people for whom normal cars are too difficult to operate to drive more.

Precisely. Most road-based retards can't figure out how to use indicators (blinkers in the US IIRC) anyway.

OP, I feel almost the exact oppisite as you. In fact I wish they would make cars much more difficult to drive, and have hundreds of knobs, levers and buttons that you have to tweak just to maintain normal operation cruising down the road. Sortof like the Millenium Falcon 🙂 Now THAT would be a user interface I could get used to. Something where you needed a co-pilot just to get to wal-mart and back
