Who would buy a new phone just for voice nav when they can download it?

Ok. Granted.

That said, I remember my extreme annoyance when I had an iPhone 4, and there was no Google Maps app for it, and Apple in their wonderful wisdom decided not to enable voice navigation in their new Apple Maps app for iPhone 4 owners, for no reason other than to create an artificial limitation to encourage upgrades. A move that still annoys me to the point where I take the opportunity to mention it when I get the chance.

You can't change the default programs and the built in actions that call up and use those programs in iOS, so download another app only takes care of most of it, not all of it.

BGR has a point though.

Perhaps the weirdness of the math is why the current version of the WSJ article no longer cites the 65 million unit figure. Sometime between Sunday at 8:00 p.m. EST and Monday at 7:00 a.m., the Journal decided to drop the number from its article. But if the 65 million number is not right, is the estimate for halving March orders correct, either?

This does seem weird, a la the BGR criticism. Is the writer of the WSJ article the same one whose had the apple beat forever?

Doesn't appear to be, at least not based on his history of WSJ articles. Does have a few other Apple stories, but none of them appear to be scathing or overly biased against Apple. Hasn't been with the WSJ all that long though, so that's not exactly a comprehensive study of his published work. But unless anyone else could present something to suggest that he's anti-Apple or just likes to drag them through the mud, I don't think there's any reason to assume that.

Apparently, the funny part about all of this is that it's old news that's just now being acted on and stirring up so much response. Also, there were similar reports of this happening last year as well, so it might not even be abnormal.

I think anyone that is into electronics and uses a smartphone would want LTE... no brainer... one reason why I didnt buy the 4.....

I was at a friend's house last night with a strong 4G signal and got 29mbps on Speedtest. It doesn't make that much of a difference to me over the 5-8 I usually see with 3G, but it's still pretty cool.

In Canada, our contracts are 3 years...

I buy my phones, which pretty much eliminates me buying an apple. (Iphone 5's are too expensive outright)

Plans that are offered to those not on Subsidized phones are better. (Generally more for less with the 2nd tier providers like Virgin Mobile Canada)

You can go to any Store today and get an Optimus G for $0 on 3 years, or a Note II for $49 on 3 yrs, or One X+ for $49.00, or Iphone 5 32GB for $249.99 on 3 years

I bought my One S for $260.00 outright off kijiji (2 months old, like new). Or I could get a 16GB iphone 5 on a 3 yr contract with a crappier plan for more money per month and $180 + tax up front.

Not hard to make a choice for me.

That's what I'm thinking. Was bound to happen eventually.

Just wait till the 5s comes out... think apple is going to quicken its release cycle kinda like they did with the ipad3 and 4. Samsung/htc/moto seem to release new flagship phones every 6 months, apple will have to follow suit, don't think apple is going to sit around a year to release a 5s refresh with minor updates.

Not true, HSPA+ still works very well especially on a cellphone which lacks productivity function in the first place. There are plenty of tech savvy users who don't mind HSPA (including Engadget editors). The current crop of smarts phones will be phased out before HSPA+ is ancient history.

Especially dual-band carrier which in some cases exceeds LTE speed.

It's not about speed. It's about latency, capacity, etc. HSPA has capacity issues especially where carriers did not purchase enough bandwidth. I guess AT&T is offloading onto LTE, but not all areas were upgraded to handle high capacity HSPA to begin with. Furthermore, it takes time to ramp from 3G UMTS to HSPA+ which is like a half second at least. Sure I get 7mbps on my phone on HSPA+, which is fine, but the fact that the phone will struggle for a few seconds before connecting, etc, my LTE iPhone doesn't deal with any of that.

And remember the faster the phone can complete a task, the faster it goes to idle.

No that's just cause there are multiple of them for one OS compared to just one for iOS.

I am not an Apple person, so I don't really keep up too much on them, but could it possibly be for a different reason? Could they be changing the screens for the 5s? Not necessarily something drastic like a size change, but maybe a something that changes it up just a bit. Maybe better recognition or something. I don't know, just trying to think of something besides "Apple is sucking" type posts.

Could be, but even if it was just a demand thing, it's not "Apple is sucking", more like "less good". They've had pretty amazing demand thus far.

It would be more likely for the rumor/report to be completely false than it would for Apple to change the screens in the 5S. They already just changed them, and there would be little point in doing it again.

So the real story is probably that iPods are dying off. Not really unexpected.

Even though that's true, it wouldn't account for a 50% drop in orders.

Why doesn't an Apple spokesman come out and squash these rumors?

Because apple probably leaked it. Generate a buzz, come out with a new i device, sells a billion of them. Stock inflates.

Why would Apple leak bad rumors? That doesn't make sense. Did they also leak the rumor that the 5 sold less than the 4S at launch in China? The fact is that Apple tends to stay away from rumors.

A month or so ago, an analyst said that Apple will bounce back and Apple's stock increased for no apparent reason. Apple's stock is pretty volatile based on rumors.

It turns out that this is old news. It just looks like they really over-ordered for this quarter, for whatever reason.
