RIP Steve.
Too bad he didn't have much time after stepping down in August to enjoy a slower paced life.

who cares
the topic keeps poping up.

Uh, probably A LOT of people.

Like him or not, like Apple or not, the computer world, and our world, would be different if it weren't for Steve Jobs. One could extrapolate many different courses for computer history to have taken if it weren't for him.

Ah shit. I have to say the man was a genius. More a marketing genius than a tech genius, but a genius nonetheless.
The PC as we know it would not exist without Jobs.

He is like Henry Ford, he didn't invent the thing, but he did things to it that completely changed the industry and how we use it.

The following were all popularized by Apple
the mouse
GUI interface
USB connectors (one of the first to adapt them in a major way)
the elimination of the floppy drive and going to CD room only
One of the 1st portables that was really portable
The newton which was one of the first handheld PDAs
iPod, not the first but the MP3 player that really changed the business
iPad, first mass popularity tablet/pad
laser printer

And I am sure there are a lot of others too, but those are the ones off the top of my head.

RIP.

Not an Apple fan, but he was an American icon and true genius. His talents will be missed and we will all be poorer for it.

Absolutely. He didn't develop these technologies himself, however. They were developed and/or popularized by Apple because of his vision for the personal computer as user friendly and asethically appealing. He said, don't just develop computers that can do x, y and z; develop products that people want to buy. That vision was no small accomplishment because it was anathema to the "function over form" mentality of the typical engineer.

They've known about this coming for a while, and I'm sure they've worked out next steps etc. The real problems will come in a couple of years when Jobs isn't around to guide them to the next "big thing".

We'll see. The corporate culture of Apple could drive the next groundbreaking product.

56... still had a lot of life to live.

Wow. Not sure what to say. I've always been a "PC rules Apple sucks" kind of guy. But damn if this dude wasn't one of the most iconic important people in the industry since it's start. Even as a PC and Droid user, I have to say, this is shitty news. 🙁
