Target.com has the Apple iPod 15GB MP3 player for $299.99. Use the 15% off code that floating around, and your total is $254.99 + $6.17 shipping.

Don't forget tax, for everyone who has a target in their state (and has sales tax).

For example, as a Washington ST res, ends up at $283 or there abouts :(

I hate sales tax....

I know it's been posted before, but if you are willing to wait there have been rumors of G4 iPods before XMas, and Apple frequently posts refurbished iPods on its website as well. I just bought a 20GB with all accessories for ~$290 shipped after tax.

1) They're selling like hotcakes at their current price
2) No other MP3 player has quite reached the level of style and polish that the iPod has.

There are some better deals out there, but iPod has the brand name going for it.

cool stuff usually isn't cheap
the high cost of ipods has some basis in material reality, unlike the price of cd's for instance, which are clearly overpriced.

I'd say those rumors are true, mainly because HP is scheduled to put out their HP branded version of the iPod soon (same hardware, but with a blueish HP logo'd case). They are already preloaind all of the new HP and Compaq PCs with iTunes to prepare for the launch. I'm betting that Apple will be the exclusive vendor for the Gen 4 iPods, while HP's models will be the older Gen 3 versions to avoid competing directly with Apple - which hopefully will allow the HP models to be more competitive in price. If all goes well, I'm expecting a price war between the HP iPod and the Dell DJ during this upcoming Christmas season to break out. I've got my fingers crossed for the 15GB models of both to go below the $150 price point. The DJ is within spitting distance of the price point right now, anyway.

I got in on the 20 gig deal also, its 279+tax and comes with all the accessories, it's a refurb but you wouldn't know that by looking at it or playing with it...also, iPods cost that much because they are just that cool. I also have an Archos Jukebox studio 10 and it is amazing the difference. It just doesn't get any better than the iPod. I guess you could liken it to why are BMWs more than KIA? When you get the answer to that question, you will know why the iPod is that price.

The only thing I wish the iPod did have was that it could be recognized by Windows XP as just a HD for transferring files, instead of having to use iTunes.

doesn't the iRiver 140 (40gb hd) have more features (like digital in/out, and play formats iPods don't, and have ability to record through microphone and some other things) and cost less than an iPod? I, too, wonder why iPod's cost so much. Aren't there comparable (or better units) out there? Just wondering since i plan on getting a hd-based player. This iPod deal here seems like a good price, though!

It's so expensive because

A) It's a brand name, Apple has been around for 20 years, Archos and whatever else you guys have mentioned hasn't.

B) People will pay for it. As long as they are under the impression that an IPod makes them cool, they will buy them.

C) ITunes makes getting MP3's quick and easy for the computer illiterate masses. Buy IPod, plug IPod into computer, double click ITunes, double click music you like, double click it onto your IPod, unplug IPod from computer, leave. No other player comes with the exclusive ability to start off that quickly.

Thus, in theory, with demand as it stands for a popular product

iPods flourish because demand is indeed high, which a direct result of effective marketing (also product popularity appeal, of course). Other examples that come to mind are Dell and AOL. While often not superior products, the marketing strategies work very well.

This is hot, but if you know anyone (a friend, relative, co-worker, whatever) who is a student, use that to your advantage! ;)

The 15 Gig Ipod is only $269 then...

If you're a student, why not grab a powerbook as well and get an ipod for around $70 after student discount and $200 MIR? :)

I'm not gonna get an ipod till they're at least below $200. It might be a while but they certainly are NOT worth $250+, to me anyways. I am not wondering WHY they are overpriced, but I agree that they ARE overpriced, especially compared to similar performing products.

BELOW $200 is what he said, and I agree too. $199 is $200 in my book, so that doesn't count :p
