Apparently the PS1 provides superb high fidelity audio playback...

Before I started my listening tests, Michael had a warning for me: "Plug in the units ? turn ?em on ? and don?t turn them off." It seems the PlayStations sound best when left on all the time. Michael was right. You shouldn?t even listen for the first three days. Both units need every second of the break-in period.

hmm. this reaks of stupidstition...

This guy was comparing it to Sony audio products, no wonder it sounded so "good". I'd bet if he had a real quality audio component from a manufacturer like Denon, Marantz, Harman Kardon or the like he'd notice that the PS1 really isn't all that great.

what a effing jacktard. Especially this gem, "They also held their own against my top-of-the-line, Class A+ rated Sony SACD machine."

I wonder if he'd put his words up to a double-blind test.

CD's are digital audio. The sound is read the same way by a $10 device as by a $1000 device.

You would think that an alleged audiophile would know that.

Uh, the 0's and 1's stay 0's and 1's, but then you have components like DACs and other shiat that make a HUGE difference in sound. Brush up on your reading.

Hook my old Panasonic discman up to a decent amp and speakers and its really sounds awful, i've got a much newer Panasonic discman that sounds exactly 11ty billion times better over an amp and speakers or a decent set of headphones...

Is that all down to the DAC quality, and thus not an issue with a purely digital system (until the speakers of course)?

I think that guy just used that story as an excuse to expense two Playstations.

My PS1 is even older then that one in the article :Q
Isn't that one the second smaller version that came out?

The picture is of the new one, the ones he writes about in the article are the old rectangle ones.

D/A convertors actually make a huge difference.

as for this article, i think it's probably pretty bogus. i don't see how having all that extra processing crap to cause interference is going to result in the best-sounding audio. nor would it make sense for sony to use high-quality DACs on a gaming machine. and the crap about break-in periods made me laugh.

Maybe if he was just using it as a transport, but he wasn't. And of course I'm sure there will be a line of people telling me the difference between different transports too ;) (well, maybe not so much around here)

The affects of jitter are well known and understood.

Transports make a difference.

Yeah, well that's why I said "maybe" :p

It might have the same jitter issues as the other sony he was testing, but the DACs would obviously be different.

:shifteyes;

I'm ok.

I've been wasting time on AT avoiding finishing my projector screen border / masking system project :)

Somehow I doubt it.
