From CNN,

<< McVeigh could be moved to an isolation cell near the execution facility as early as Friday, but prison officials did not disclose precisely when that might happen. The prison goes into "lockdown" Sunday night, but not until inmates finish watching the NBA finals. >>

Lord forbid that the first Federal execution in 30 some years be affected by the prisoner's "rights" to watch the NBA finals.

it's not the other inmates' fault that McVeigh killed a bunch of ppl, why should they be 'punished' for it.

Although I have to admit thinking about their rights is a bit silly, since they are criminals

I think they should definately have been granted the stay! Now he will die and he will never know the results of the finals or how the Mariners finish this season! Poor Tim!

Do they allow prisoners to do this so that they don't riot? They get some pretty leniant treatment in Canada too (nice Christmas dinners, Playstation). Apparently the prisoners could overwhelm the prison if they wanted to and so you have to keep them happy enough not to do it. Anybody wanna verify this?

I've worked in a prison before, they want to keep those guys as calm as possible. It's not worth having a riot start because of a stupid NBA game.

Yes, prison riots happen if prisoners are unfairly treated... i was incarcerated in Millhaven (Max) and Collins Bay (Med/Max), and the higher the security (Max, Med, Min) of the institution, the greater is the authority of the Inmate Committee (an inmate elected committee). Do you really think locking people up and mistreating them is going to make them socially competent members of society? Anyways, the Inmate Committee is the voice for the prisoners, and especially in higher security institutions, there's more compromise and you definitely don't want to upset them over little issues like a basketball game. Riots do start, and especially in higher lvl systems, when people are doing life and 20+ yrs, you really think they give a sh1t if another life term is put on them? Please, i've seen riots start for as lame reasons as an hour late on lunch or too early lockups on xmas.

The treatment of inmates is probably why in Canada the reoffending rates is less than 1/5... so that means 4/5 don't reoffend. That's a pretty good rehabilitation rate if you ask me.

Hell, I was in OKC when it went off. I knew people who were killed. A 12 yr old girl's dad 2 houses down died. He admitted he did it. He wants to die. Let's just get it over with.
