Apparently, I am "THAT guy" (food smell in cafeteria)

you CAN eat what you want, but its the same as blasting your music on the train, you're enjoying it and you're probably entitled to, but you piss everyone off around you because you're a self centered prick.....

I make sure to never warm up fish in the microwave. If it's fish curry, take out the fish in a separate container, and just warm (not nuke) the curry/rice before mixing everything.

I am sure some people love the smell of Indian food (I do), however pungent it is. But no one likes the smell of nuked fish!

Wow. A lot of oversensitive pricks on ATOT. How about this? I'll eat what I want and you'll eat what you want, and I won't bitch if I think your food stinks. Deal?

It's work, it's the cafeteria. If I farted in the bathroom would you chastise me there too? Suck it in and deal with it. And I thought my generation was full of whiners.

No, you sound exactly how I would imagine your generation would sound. "I can do whatever the fuck I want whenever the fuck I want and I don't care what anyone else thinks or how it impacts them". That about sums it up.

Some of us live in the real world with real people and try to co-exist with them in a respectful, mutually beneficial manner. You seemingly cannot comprehend such a thing.

Not quite the same thing. There is no smell in the bathroom that is pleasant and we aren't in there trying to do pleasant things. Eating is supposed to be a pleasant experience and having someone microwave fish is a complete office faux pas. It is up there with having bad body hygiene - sure, you can have breath that smells like ass, but at the end of the day, wouldn't you prefer to conform to reasonable social norms and brush your goddamn teeth?

I remember I coexisted just fine in a respectful, mutually beneficial manner with my friends in high school, even when I thought their food smelled like shit during lunch. We all put up with it, and we talked and had a great time. So did most everyone else. If my generation could do it as adolescents, I pity the adult that has a hard time with this.

Some of us live in the real world with real people and try to not bitch over something as small as a bad food smell that you get used to inside of one minute.

Big difference between bad breath/BO, which is a potential sign of disease and filth; and a stinky food smell which is a sign of.. food...

regardless of the source, the impact is the same: it offends

IDGAF but I know other people do, so I don't bring in funky asian shit to work.

That's not what he's saying at all. What we're both saying is that we're willing to take a little inconvenience from other people as long as they'll take it from us. This isn't a forceful "I can do whatever the fuck I want" attitude. It's more a "live and let live" attitude. It's about identifying the inconsequential shit and proceeding to let it slide. The "I won't stand for being even slightly affected by something someone else is doing" attitude is far less mature IMO.

and if the other person would prefer not to be inconvenienced, and not inconvenience you, what then? fuck him?

OP is that guy.

Sure he is free to nuke some super smelly food in the common area that other people frequent and may have adverse reactions towards. I am also free to find his cubicle later and let loose several floaters before walking on my way.

Oh and I do love good food, no matter how strong smelling it is, but I'm not the type to break that food to work and eat it. Sandwich taste great for lunch and don't smell.

Everyone would always prefer not to be inconvenienced. Besides, if they're the type to bitch about the odor of fresh food in the cafeteria, chances are they have a lot of habits that would get under my skin. None of which would I ever feel the need to call them on.

Yes there are probably people out there who do absolutely nothing that bothers anyone ever. They accomplish this mostly by doing nothing period. Should we all emulate them then?

The scope of this discussion is food that smells in the workplace - something that we each individually have control over. I choose to respect my coworkers by not bringing in food that may offend them and hope they would do the same for me

Curry and seafood doesn't disgust or bother me at all, but natto and durian...
