We were all smart enough to post in the FIRST thread on this topic. For some reason this thread is still going even though the very first reply declared it a repost.

well i'll stick here because I cannot hold attention that long, and never noticed the other thread... popped in here for a break from this paper due tonight. but back to it I go now.

Aren't these really liberal Christians who are bending the words in the Bible to make it their own meaning?

Its not really twisting it.

One of the quotations was the verse Leviticus 20:13 from King James Version : "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them."

And

Paul later writes: "Make no mistake: no fornicator or idolator, none who are guilty either of adultery or of homosexual perversion, no thieves or grabbers of drunkards of slanderers or swindlers, will possess the kingdom of God."

And for the record, my posting these verses doesnt mean I agree with them, just posting what it says,

I will see your two verses and raise you three straight from Jesus

But the Pharisees, when they heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, gathered themselves together. One of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, testing him. "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?" Jesus said to him, "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment. A second likewise is this, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments."

So what the fuck is thier argument now?

No but see, my neighbor's not gay. The gay guy is 2 doors down.

Neither should Christians.

No truer statement could be said. You don't necessarily have to agree with someone's way of life to still be their friend and to love them. Jesus hung out with the prostitutes, the gentiles, the murderers, the no-names. Jesus loved them and offered them salvation. He didn't say "I hate you, you're going to rot in hell." Even when evidence of this is brought up with people from this church, they say "No no no no, you're wrong, you're manipulating..." I watched these bigots on 60 minutes and I sighed the biggest sigh of my life. I can't believe there are people that live their lives for hate. I think I die a little bit inside each time I hear of these people doing stuff like this.

That's irrelevant, because homosexuals aren't doing anything wrong, because they are not harming anybody. The nonsense about Jesus loving everybody is a smokescreen. Whether you believe that a supernatural being hates a group of people or hates their "way of life", you are a bigot.

Statements about Jesus loving everybody are almost always followed by "but he hates certain lifestyles", which is just a really absurd opinion if you have any knowledge of history or science. Then again if everyone understood the last 15,000 years of human history, there probably would be no religion at all.

I'm actually taking a course on Pauline studies right now, and there is only one real passage mentioned (from my course notes):

1 Cor. 6.9-11: Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God (NIV)

Please note that any verse or verse fragment can be taken horribly out of context, so an exegetical approach is necessary...

It's worth noting that the greek word used by Paul is essentially a made-up term, arsenkoites. You will not find that word used anywhere in literature that pre-dates Paul's authorship of 1 Corinthians.

There is some debate about the proper way to translate it, but none of the reasonable translations connect it with homosexuality in general. Instead, as somewhat indicated in your translation above, it most likely describes promiscuous males (hetero- or homosexual) or pederasts connected with the common practice of temple prostitution in the worship of Moloch, which Paul considered to be idolatrous. It's the same with regard to "porneia," which describes the female temple prostitutes.

No doubt this decision will be appealed. But it should stop them from protesting for the foreseeable future. Good stuff.

This is not a free speech case period. They were sued because they caused emotional distress.

WBC rights stop where the Victims start.

These nuts live in my town and I have watched their pathetic hate for 15+ years. I hope they spend the next 15 in the courts fighting this if it will keep their kids off the streets.

New Testament trumps Old Testament. Old Testament is a history lesson. New Testament is how to live life. A fundamentalist Christian would try to live his life like Jesus. Would Jesus create a campaign to spread the word that God hates fags? No, he would embrace fags and tell them God loves them and even they can receive salvation.

x2. And if homosexuality is indeed a sin, it's no different than any other sin; lust theft, fornication, etc... (all IMO)

Even if you take it literally, homosexuality is only mentioned as one of many sins, not the first and foremost of them. You don't see the Westboro guys picketing fraternities because of their drunkenness, or used car dealerships because they're swindlers. For some reason they have lifted a couple sentences out of the Bible and claimed that those constitute the core message.

EXACTLY. I also felt sick while watching that 60 minutes thing. It's sad when someone is destroying their own life, it's sad and disgusting when they're destroying the lives of others, and children.

Hence why I said I dont read nor follow the bible, too much room for people to have put their twist on things through rewrites and translations. Im really not sure what religion you could call me, I believe in a supreme being of some sort, I just dont think humans can ever know who/what he/she/it is.

Church members routinely picket funerals of military personnel killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, carrying signs such as "Thank God for dead soldiers" and "God hates fags."
WOW. If I had a son or daughter and saw some piece of shit holding a sign that said that, I'd be hard not to beat their head against the pavement.
