Hi folks,

My friend would like to make an exact copy of his hard disk so that he can restore the image to a new HDD. Is there an app to do such thing or can Ghost do it? We're talking about 10GB HDD here.

Thanks!

Ghost can definately do that, but it's not free.

You might try checking out the HD Cloning programs (scroll down to the Hard Disk Cloning section) on the Ultimate Boot CD. I've never used them, but there are 3 free programs that can probably do what you need.

That's ok, my friend doesn't mind paying. But if there's a free one out there, he wouldn't mind. Will have to dig more on Ghost then. Thanks for the heads up.

Edit: BTW, excellent link as well :)

Yeah, the Ultimate Boot CD is amazing. I've know about it for a while, but finally got around to using it a few weeks ago. It's really easy to add your own programs/image files, and modify the menu to access them.

BTW, it seems like my friend would like to backup his 10GB HDD and restore it on a 20GB or 40GB HDD. Is that possible in Ghost or the other apps in the UBCD site?

It's possible, but it will overwrite any data on the destination partition. If it's a new drive or partition, it shouldn't be a problem.

That's true for Ghost and the rest of the apps?

At work we use Altiris for our imaging needs. However, it's meant more for mass imaging (3300+ computers throughout the company) needs, rather than backing up your home pc.

I recommend using Ghost.

If you have to buy something - look at Acronis' TrueImage 7.0. Makes Ghost look very crude. It auto creates a bootable CD and then has a direct CLONE feature. Outstanding!

Thanks for the info folks. I'll have my friend pursue the Ghost option first and determine the outcome.
