A month ago (or so) when Best Buy introduced Nvidia branded video cards, there was alot of speculation. Well it looks like Apoppin was completely accurate as to what the reasoning was: Nvidia and Best Buy are setting up promo booths to show off the 3D tech Nvidia touts. This particular booth I saw was small and didn't really have much going on. It needs a large screen 3D TV hooked up to either a really good laptop or a desktop to give it the "wow" factor - but it looks like Apoppin was right in predicting why Nvidia came out with their own branded cards exclusive to just Best Buy. I popped on the glasses and watched the looped movie the laptop had going. I was surprisingly impressed with it - the 3d effects looked pretty darn good, but I'm more than positive that if it were actual in-game demonstrations (as opposed to a pre-recorded movie loop) the laptop would have been highly under powered.

I was at my new local BB day before yesterday. They had a 3d stand setup in the TV section. They had 3d glasses mounted on a stick that you walk up and stick your head in. I had though about buying a setup until I tried it. Its definite pass for me.

this is nothing special, those displays showed up in frys last summer. we have had a 3D vision demo of some type since 3D vision came out actually, but that exact display specifically has been here since last summer

I believe the technical term for glasses that look like that in the military is: RPG.

Rape Prevention Glasses

;)

When I was in the Air Force, they were called Birth Control glasses. Good thing I did not need glasses then. ;)

3D TV hasn't taken off yet. I don't really think 3D computers will either not until they solve the shutter glasses issues. Plus does it add to the experience that much? For me 3D movies are so far hit and miss. Up was great but other movies were a bit meh.

The fact that NV has this display and not AMD may send the following message to consumers:

1) NV is at the forefront of gaming in general
2) NV as at the forefront of 3D gaming technologies
3) More publicity for the brand (like this thread).

Even if none of us care about 3D gaming just yet, this looks like a win from a marketing perspective. NV is always 1 step of AMD when it comes to these things. Next time a consumer goes to check out videocards, they may even be unaware that AMD cards can even do 3D in the first place...

They're still BCGs and the military still gives them out. It's a easy way to figure out who is still in TRADOC and hasn't been allowed to go to optometry yet to get new ones, that is if the yelling sergeants and lack of beret wear/beret flash doesn't give it away.

This is interesting since best buy has a way of investing in the core products they end up pushing heavily...

Best Buy capital has been very aggressive over the last few quarters...

oh come on people, i'm a casual gamer and not really all into techno gadgets, and even I wanted those 3D games and movies. The only reason holding me back is that I don't spend enough time gaming to justify the setup.

It's funny hearing geeks (not know for their model looks) whine about glasses...

FYI this is not "Geek topmodel", this is Anandtech.

I lov 3D in the movies and I am goint to get this (both for PC and TV).

Hollywood is going 3D...like it or not.

3D is coming in just about every way- technological wise.
Movies
Cable TV
Televisions
I think its all very cool and tech almost everyone has heard about forever.
There will always be a need for glasses, because manipulation of what our eyes 'see' is what makes it work the best ,imo.
Just found out my retired neighbor got the whole big screen 3d package.
Mentioned college football does a lot of the games in 3d ,and its incredible.
AMD needs to push forward and make 3d happen, so their fans jump on board, lol

I still think it's funny that "Avatar" really kicked all this 3D nonsense into high-gear. And then the marketing gurus got into the game (or were bank-rolling JC anyway):

"You too can have the same experience at home as watching the most expensive movie ever made with the most high-tech technologies available to Hollywood's most cutting-edge director!"

And all the Sheeple say, "Baaahhh" and open their wallets.

A lot of people said the same thing about HD television in 2002.
We saw it on display on 5000 dollar televisions without any HD channels available. But the technology was there.
Now the whole world has a flat screen HD tv. HD started the same way on cable, just a couple channels. Imo, alot of companies see the same opportunity for this tech to explode.

it's funny how the anti-3D guys are the pro-AMD (anti-NV) haha lol I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that them AMD don't have 3D??
c'mon tits look better in 3D

I do enjoy some 3d movies, Ive seen... some use it well... others not so much.

However common amoung them is that they are annouying for the eyes/head over long periodes. I dont see this hitting the TVs and there being back to back, movies/tv series in 3d on TVs.

I wouldnt want to spend hours gameing with 3d glasses,... simply because after a hour or two your head/eyes need a rest from it.

To me the 3d aspects biggest market, is probably in movies... and being able to watch 3d movies would be nice, I must admit.

Yes nvidia doing a booth like this at bestbuy is a win for them, this is bound to help push sales in bestbuy for nivida products.

Amd supports 3d too, you just have to buy glasses from vendors not from them (I believe).
Which is the genius of nvidia, they have a "total package" where you get a monitor+glasses in 1, that work with their cards. This allows them to put up booths like this in bestbuy.

I just looked at the picture in the OP's first post. There's the words "TRY ME" on the counter. I would have put a 3D holographic life-sized prop of a hot virtual computer generated vixxxen with big bazooka tits and curves... with "TRY ME" next to it. Make it so that her tits sway as you shift your head.

Oh yeah, men of all ages regardless of orientation will check it out. Marketing 101: sex sells.

people might laugh at this... but... I could actually see that working.
