miramax is set to release a newly re-edited version of apocalypse now on august 15th that will include 53 minutes of restored footage. supposedly the ending that had eluded coppola when he first completed the film has now been 'found'. he he. hope so.

this final version which coppola worked on with the originla film editor is currently being exhibited at cannes as a non-competition entry.

That sucks. It's one of my Top 3 favorite movies of all time, and the only version I've seen is the theatrical release. In fact, I spent more money than I normally would buying the DVD last December! And now they are releasing a director's cut! ARGH!

tigerbait, possibly. i think there were two ending filmed twenty years, but neither of them
could be cut to make any sense to coppola at the time. when i mean 'found' is coppola is
apparently happy with the results of latest (and probably last) stab at apocalypse now, whereas
before he suffered mightily for his art but was never satisfied with the final cut.

did you know that steve mcqueen was orginally tapped to play martin sheen's role but his
asking price of 3 million was too steep. harvey keitel actually began the project as sheen's
character but was released before they started actual shooting because he appeared less of
military grunt on the set under test conditions, even though he served in the u.s. armed
forces as a marine.

Martin Sheen also had a massive heart attack during filming. He was out for a while but came back and finished. If you haven't seen it, watch Hearts of Darkness. Great documentary of the making of Apocalypse Now.
