This is offtopic but...anyone know if model 500 plays cd-r/cd-rw? This is a nice dvd player, but I already have a pioneer 525 and i'm happy with it, but I need another dvd player for my bedroom since I bought myself another wega ^_^ ... I would've purchased the 600A for $100, but that deal's dead...

Nope there are no loopholes for the 703. The bios is flashable, but noone has figured out how to flash it with a CD yet. I wish we had a Wards in Hawaii, cause this is a pretty good deal.

CC has a $20 rebate...so why aren't they price matching it at $189 so that after rebate it brings it to $169???

I obviously care or I wouldn't have asked. Yeah, that's right, I want to pay more.

Well, I was actually being sarcastic. My original point was I don't want to waste time going to CC if I get there and they say "We have a rebate, so we'll only take off $10.00."

Those guys work on commission, and I really don't feel like arguing.

I figured "screw CC" and just went to my local Monkey Wards and bought it from them directly. $169 is a great deal for a DVD Player that supports mp3, supports 3 Discs, AND has a built-in Dolby Digital decoder. I bought the last boxed one from this particular store (in Rosemead, CA).

It reads CDR/CDRW perfectly (better than the Apex AD-660, which chokes on CDRW's and is *very* picky about how you have to burn the mp3's -- ISO9660/Mode 1/8.6 Character Names). I put in a CDRW burned in the Joliet/Mode2/Long File names and it played it great!

There are two annoying things about it though:

1) The OSD (On Screen Display) is defaulted to "ON," which means you have to turn it off to watch a movie without being annoyed by the track number, time, etc.

2) The tray mechanism is a bit loud and clunky. When you are all finished and want to turn off the DVD Player, you have to wait for it to check all three trays before you can turn it off. (I've never owned a multi-tray disc changer, so that may be a normal feature.)

3) No "Power" or "Open" button on the remote.

All in all, I love it though and will be keeping it. I am sure the OSD problem can be fixed by a firmware update. And this unit supposedly can be upgraded by a CDR. We'll see.

And for heaven's sake, there isn't a "loopholes" menu!! :p
