I have this DVD player.
Yes. You do need to use the shift key on the remote.
The remote is short-range and isn't very responsive. The eject button takes a few second to respond.
Other than that the DVD player is fine.
Mine plays VCD, SVCD, DVD and MP3 (CD-R and CD-RW).
I agree completely with WiseOldMan's post ... what I got for the $ was a basic DVD player thats suits my needs .. I rarely watch DVDs or movies. I found a ton of info here
Its interesting to read posts on that link which point to a certain day in the manufacturing process that the units may have been region free from the factory. As luck would have it, I have that exact model # but have never tested it since I rarely use it. Still a nice bonus if it is in fact true.
just a word to the wise, I have had bad experiences with APEX. A friend who had one said it would randomly spit the DVD out during playback, another friend says the tray came clean off the first day. YMMV, of course. These things are cheap for a reason, but they may suit your purposes (infrequent usage, gift for ex-wife, etc) -Joe
The build quality of these players is very very cheap. I bought a codefree Apex a couple years ago and it was okay. I bought the 1200 around Christmas for $50 and it fell apart upon removing from the carton so I returned it. A waste of time. Beware!
I've been using my Apex AD-1201 DVD player that I picked up from CC a few weeks ago. No doubt about it, it does have a "cheap" feel to it, but has played everything I have thrown at it so far...including SVCDs of captured TV shows.
I purchased the 1200 as an Xmas gift for my father. It plays everything, including SVCD's burned on cheapo CDR's that other players can't handle. (Just watched Matrix Reloaded.) The ergonomics of the FFW/REW are very good, if that is important to you (16X speed both ways). I would definitely make the same purchase again. The player is also appealingly small.
