Just bought a new sony G400 19 inch monitor. It has a slight bowing geometry problem in the center, is this common with ag monitors? is there anything i can do to correct it? The monitor has beautiful colors and text, just deciding if I can put up with the slight geometry problem. Mostly noticed with the web browser. I returned a cheap shodow mas because of the washed out colors (compared to the triniton). Any shadow mask monitors have above average colors (i'm already in for about $500 just gotta decide if the trade of is worth it) I could get a hatachi cm 772, heard they were nice for shadow mask monitors. I've got a slight bowing effect at the top of my cheap a$$ KDS Trinitron. This monitor was dirt cheap, and is just a temporary replacement for me. I've read over on CNET that some people who reviewed the monitor you have had geometry problems that they couldn't correct.

I've heard good things from other people on this forum about the Samsung 19" 955DF shadow mask monitors. You might want to check them out because they are perfectly flat.
 
My KDS 17" Trinitron has the same problem. I have seen at least 2 others that have the same problem too.
 
It has nothing to do with the aperature grill. It has to do with the flat screen. The older verticaly flat ones don't have this trait.

Try to adjust the geometry as best you can with a good test program, and then let it alone. You'll quickly get used to it.
 
Really when you look at it it looks kinda like its concave. It is an outstanding picture. Kinda like it wants to be a 3-d while in 2-d. Great or games. mark
 
What would be a good test program "colorific" or something for geometry? Any ideas where I could download or buy or share?

That would be a good one. I just didn't have a link to it. That's the one I use the most. Download that and you can set everything up.
 
Thanks for the calibration programs, the monitor lines up appropriately the slight bow is most noticable i web browsers and box type screens. I have read where many people say this is common for flat 19 in AG monitors. I'm probably being picky, I love the color and brightness of the screens. Guess it is either slightly duller colors but perfect geometry. Or great color and brightness but small geometry problems. Or?? marked@erols.com
 
Yeah that's common for all flat-screen ag monitors. Some find it very annoying and it varies between each individual monitor. I don't think any of the monitors have controls to fix the bowing. They have trapezoid, parallel/rotation, etc.. but nothing for the bowing.

I haven't heard much about geometry problems with good shadow masks so I assume the geometry is better. I'd take the better colors and brightness and some minor geometry problem that I barely notice over a shadow mask.

As for other options, there is the LG Flatron monitors. They are a shadow mask I think but supposedly have the good colors of an AG monitor. So basically it's a combination of the two; good colors, no AG damper wires, good geometry (?). I don't know much about them yet so people go buy them and report back with comments. 😉
 
My flat screen ag samsung 900NF has the same bowing problem as you describe. A 1mm bow at the top of the screen towards the centre. This is the 3rd monitor that i've gone through. They all have the same 'bowing' problem to some extent. Some even have a bow on the bottom of the screen. After using it for about a week or so i can say that i've gotten used to it. I have seen perfect geometry on some flat screen aperture grill monitors. Try and exchange it. But it's usually a hit or a miss.

It also seems to me that the bow is getting slighter after a month of use. Maybe it's burning itself in or something..or maybe it's because i'm just getting used to it. heh
 
I was also wondering if there was any program that will allow you to adjust the 'eyedrop' effect. thus that will eliminate the bowing.
 
The inside surface of the glass has a different curvature than the external surface. My KDS 17" Diamondtron is two plus years old and displays perfectly. I just adjust all the barrel and pincushion distortion out and leave it. You get used to it after a while. Funny huh, when you finally get to look at a decent monitor you think there is something wrong with it.

I love it...
yap it have annoyings things like the "dumping wires",etc... but...
I can live with that... yap after the first week I started to NOT NOTICING THESE ANNOYING things.. I wonder why?

never never again I would buy a "TRADITIONAL MONITOR" NEVER...

one says that 95% of our brains is devoted for vision... don't hurt your standard of living with mask...

buy a kyro II it will get hand in hand with a aperture grill monitor

Anyone have a AG tube 19 inch that does not have a slight bowing effect. Its starteing to bug me. I know its there and I always look at it. Kinda like a scratch on a new car.

The older KDS Trinitron monitors weren't completely &quot;flat.&quot; I've got one of the new ones and it has geometry problems. I'm on my third one and the same problems still exsist. It's hard to get used to seeing the text and images on 1/3 of the right side of the screen stretch out to the wrong proportions. It doesn't look right and it isn't correctable. I find it weird that the other two had the same problem, and also the bowing effect at the top. The first one I bought even had a problem with the brightness control. It didn't work and was set to 100%. Of course, I immediately took it back. It's a $199 monitor; you get what you pay for.
 
i have a smasung 900NF and there is SLIGHT bowing problem but not even 1mm thick so i dont care.
the colours make up for it.beside this monitor and a shadow...ag clearly wins..
youw ill get used to it...i was the same way when i bought it but in 2 weeks you wont even ontice it
 
yes it is hit and miss. Some will bow to a greater extent than others. Yes I have seen some monitors that have no bow whatsoever.
