This is a repost...But nonetheless this is not a particularly
good surge protector anyway and doesn't merit much thought.
It's only rated for 480 joules, which is really wimpy. That's better
than a $4.99 Belkin "surge protector", but it's far far from a decent
surge protector (which should be rated at around 1500 joules or
higher...)

Blah blah blah and don't believe the list price...

that's odd that a $60 surge protector would only do 480 joules. what is the diff between that and the eP joule rating?

Don't let the "low" joule rating here deceive you.The ep joule rating is 3420.I do believe that the prf series is a higher grade than the professional"pro" series and the Pro8T2 professional model was very highly rated in the Janruary 2000 test by Consumer Reports. For 20.00 ,this is one nice deal.Like most everything these days"specsmanship"plays a big part in advertising. There seems to be little agreement on a standardized way to measure joules and depending on the test used, the calculations can produce wildly different ratings.I think APC includes theEp joule rating so you can compare it to other brands that promote huge joule ratings on their products. What matters is whats inside the suppressor and at 2.3 pounds you can be sure it's alot more than some lightweight cheapie rated at 750 to 1500 joules. If I didn't have all the protectors I need,I'd jump on this deal in a heartbeat.

I already posted this deal a few days ago.

This is a very hot deal. This is a very high end surge protector (lower model rated #2 by Consumer Reports). The Joule rating is not important. It only tells you what it can take before it dies. When it dies APC will give you a free replacement. What is important is the "let through voltage" or "clamping voltage". That tells you how much excess current it lets through before it starts protecting. Most surge protectors are rated for 300-400V. This model is rated for 40V. That is a much better number. APC makes the best power protection products. I have seen plenty of proof.

I know plenty of people who have had stuff fried that was protected by a Belkin surge protector. I have yet to see anything protected by an APC Surge Arrest fry. I did once have a Surge Arrest with a bad connection inside and APC replaced it without a problem. APC is the BEST.

This deal is scorching HOT! I may even go and buy another one or two.

Every thing (that requires electrical power :p) in my home is protected by APC. I love them :)
Get one or two and be protected :p

I have a bunch of NewPoint surge protectors that I bought on
closeout at MicroCenter for $3-7. These originally sold for $40-70.

Anyway, they have 40V let-through protection, 100->1 EMI/RFI noise
reduction, 1800J and higher maximum energy dissipation (depending
on the model), clamping response time of <1ns, etc. Basically,
the same let-through spec as the APC and BETTER maximum energy
dissipation by a large margin...

These were on the MicroCenter shelf and not marked down, but rang
up at the closeout price. If you have a MicroCenter near you
(forget the Cambridge, MA store...that's the one I cleaned out),
check the shelves for NewPoint protectors. These are the older
models with two outlets on top and six outlets under a flap.
Models AxxxT. The one sitting in front of me (although there
were several) has MicroCenter SKU 128751.

I just received mine and this is what the literature says about "Always On": These two outlets provide conditioned power directly from the utility source. It is recommended that they be used for charging equipment or for devices that require constant power. GG
