Option A (Dope Place)
Pros: Duplex, 2,000+ s.f., big ass living room, two bathrooms, laundry room inside of apartment, central air, patio, good size bedroom (12x13 i believe), and a guest room that won't be rented out. Big ass living room that can totally fit all of my home theater gear. lot's of cute pratt college girls in the building ;) This place also has a newly renovated kitchen and brand new appliances. A swank pad to say the least.

Cons: Lots of roommates - 4, but only one on my floor. Rent is $300 more than option B

Option B (Less Dope Place)
Pros: $300 less than option A. Bedroom about the same size as option A. Slightly more convenient train wise (close to the Q). Same neighborhood basically just a few streets over. Decent living room and only 2 other roommates

Cons: Not as dope. Living room decent size but only big enough for my tv and not my speakers and full 5.1 set up. One bathroom, no central air. A basic and nice place but not as "dope."

Saving $300 a month is a big deal but I can afford option A.. argh!
The more roomates the more potential for problems!

Excellent point. I'll be checking out OPTION B again tonight but Option A is such a sweet place - central air is VERY rare in NYC as is a two-floor apartment. Let's see what happens.

$900 vs. $540. I'm considering the $540 really $600 since I'll have to buy an A/C and pay more for electricity.

An A/C unit won't add $60 to your electricity for 12 months. You'll probably use more electricity in the larger apartment anyway. Me and a friend were looking at living in a real nice place here in Boston. It was gonna cost $1100 a month, but it was big, central air, had a pool on the roof, gym, everything. We decided to pay $500 a month and live in some crappy place and it was the best decision. It's a lot of extra cash to have around, and it's not stuck paying for something I'm not even going to own.

4 roommates or 2. The answer is obvious. The roommate problems caused by having 4 will outweigh anything else.
[*]There will be 8+ people (roommate+ one friend) in the building at all times when you want to sleep. Usually with the stereo blaring.
[*]Your expensive equipment will be broken and/or stolen.
[*]You will have no room for food in the fridge/freezer/cupboards. Say goodbye to the ability to eat/drink pizza leftovers, pop, alcohol, etc. What food you do keep in your room will be eaten by others. Probably by people you don't even know.
[*]You will have battles over bills, these battles will consume all of your free time. The battles will be the same over and over again each month. You will end up paying much more than your roommates.
[*]The apartment will be trashed, and you will pay a heafty fee and lose your deposit.

option A. After 2 apartments with wall unit A/C I will NEVER live in a place without central air again. Wall units suck and only cool the room they are in, and barely at that....

I'm cheap and all, but Central Air and another bathroom would probably sway me.

$300/mo is a lot of dough. But 4 roommates is a nightmare. Go for option B and murder all the roommates. You can hide the bodies by consuming them. You'll need a powerful blender for the bones.

All VERY valid points. Thank you for your input, giving me a lot to think about.

I can afford the $300, I wouldn't consider the place if I couldn't. But that'll bring my partying/entertainment budget down to $100 a week. The $300 would go into a little more partying and a lot more savings. ($200 in the bank since I already budgeted for the higher rent).

Why not find a smaller apartment with 1br and live by yourself?

Since you have no chance whatsoever with any of the college girls in the first building, I recommend option B.

Yep...

Actually, i haven't had time for ladies but have become an odd flirt-a-holic. Flirting with idealistic college girls is fun but shouldn't be a factor. In fact, i'd probably feel more pressured to, you know, shave and such.

Rent is really expensive here in NYC. A 1 br could be had for $900 but in a not so desireable place. The part of brooklyn i'm interested in is hip without being pretentious, a quick commute to my work (my current commute is an hour, it would be cut down in half), is full of similar aged people, and pretty safe too. A 1 br there would be $1,000+

Two bathrooms will be well worth $300 a month, especially with roommates.

FYI: I'm taking the bigger/more expensive place. The smaller place picked someone who they interviewed earlier and the other places I saw sucked, so I jumped at the duplex.

Thanks for helping me think this out!
