Apartment renting

Got a quick question about renting. If 3 people are moving into a 2 bedroom apartment, how should the cost of rent be split? Numbers and reasons will help. Thanks.

Bahahaha! Poor college students amuse the crap out of me! Three people in what's probably a 700-SF two bedroom cracker box.

Good luck with the neighbors and the police.

Apartments suck Moose Nuts...I am SO SICK of living in one. :disgust: Buncha damn weenies I've got for neighbors.

f^#k that! I certainly wouldn't want to pay the same rent if I'm sleeping on the couch in the livingroom while others have a room to themselves. Thank God I've never had to share a home with roommates.

He's talking about basic rent, not phone bills. Water and electricty can be split evenly. basic phone bill is split 3 ways, with each person paying their share of long distance charges.

I would just split it evenly.. It's the easiest way.

I don't think all the fuss relating to how much space you have etc is worth it. Give each person a room, and have the 3rd person use the living room.. and each pay equally.

I would have no problems with this. The point isn't how much space you get or whatever, the point is to get rent paid. You're each living there, you each can pay equally. It makes everybody happy. 33% each isn't much different than the 50/25/25 idea. The person paying 50% will like it, and the extra 8% for the other two people isn't significant enough to worry about.

JMO.

Asking on a internet forum.

You will probably talk to your roommates over IM when you're all at home.

On the other hand, it's best to discuss it with them. Suggest the most obvious thing first, splitting it evenly. If anybody feels like they're getting the shaft, ask them what they think should be done.

50% for the person in a room (single). 25% for each sharing a room.

this is how we share - especially since the person living by themself has the master bedroom with private bath to themself, plus a bigger room.

at the beginning of the year it was 4 in the apt, but then it was down to three.

WTF, figure it out with the 3 people. J00 retaded?

yea no kidding.

imo, the person with his/her own room pays more than the other two.

ie: rent is 1000/month. person with own room pays 500, people that share pay 250 each.

The way we did it in school was the person with their own room pays like 50-75 bucks more a month. But our reasoning was that we didn't want some random 4th for a roommate anyways, so we would just all pick up some of the slack.

Well that would not be fair. What if there is only one bath room, then 2 people that are paying less get more.

Split is 3 ways, each person pays 333, or big room (2 people) cost 600 and small room (1 person) cost 400.

One suggestion - put all 3 people in one room, and use the other room as a office/lounge area. 50/25/25 is a bit too high for the person in the single bedroom - 40/30/30 is more like it if you split the bedrooms like that. The bedrooms are not all there is to the apartment - there is a lot of shared space as well, the third guy shouldn't have to pay half. Utilities should still be 33/33/33 though.

40/30/30 on 750 rent that would be about an extra 80 bucks for person getting the solo room. sounds fair.

maybe you want to bump it up or down, depending on particular.

He never mentioned how the living arrangement is, all he said was three people moving into a two bedroom apartment. I had a situation a few years ago where me and my buddy shared a two bedroom apartment, went 50/50 on all the bills, then slowly but surely his girlfriend made her way in, a little at time, then it got to the point where she was staying every night. I then sat my roommate down and said that since she's living here, she's not going to live here rent free, so she's going to pay 1/3, even though they are sharing a room. She still used the hot water to take showers, electricity, and phone. He didn't like that, and neither did she, but when I threated to move out, they quickly saw things my way.

If it's a case like that where a bf/gf are sharing a room, and you're in your own room, then everything should be divided by three.

I was looking at some roommate-wanted listings and saw an ad where people were looking for 4 people to share a 1 bedroom apartment. It was previously 2 guys and 2 girls 🙂
