Apartment Gardening

I am going to be moving into an apartment in a few weeks and would love to grow some (legal) plants. I love to cook, and while flowers are great and everything, I want to grow some vegetables or herbs because I feel like they are more useful and satisfying. I have a balcony so I would most likely be using that to grow things on.

I was thinking probably garlic, some red or green peppers, some tomatoes, and possibly onions. The garlic is probably the only one of those I really have my heart set on because it is what I use the most. My dad enjoys gardening and has grown many vegetables in the past, including lots of garlic so I have plenty of cloves that I can plant from his grows.

I have done some research on the internet but I am just curious if anyone here has successfully grown vegetables or herbs in an apartment, or even just in small to medium sized pots. Any suggestions on what to grow or tips are appreciated. Thanks!

just get some pots and do it. i used to grow herbs (chives, basil, mint) on my balcony too and a chili plant. it was nice. i never thought about garlic and onions though..will have to try that..i love garlic too. tomatoes are really easy to grow too. the pots i used were about 3 gallon sized.
