Apartment dwellers...why do you need a gigantic dog?

I think it's fucking cruel to keep a large dog in an apartment. Unless its a super lazy breed like a Great Dane, it's just downright mean. What pisses me off the most is that a lot of my neighbors leave these dogs on their 2 sqft balcony 24/7. Most of them bark and cry all night due to separation anxiety and probably the cold. :'(

Some people should not have animals...same thing goes for kids.

As long as you take the dog outside regularly for long walks it doesn't matter to the dog where you live.

The problem with your neighbors seems to be that they leave their dogs outside on the balcony, which isn't so different from leaving a dog chained in the backyard all day. Dogs need exercise and mental stimulation, not a 5000 sq feet home with two swimming pools.

Unfortunately we live in a pet culture. Maybe someday the people of this culture will grow up and lose their selfish need for living breathing toys.

The sad reality is that there are very few people that should own pets needing attention/stimulation. Keeping any breed of dog locked up inside a house/yard/balcony all day while you work is cruel. Go back a few thousand years and look at what dogs were used for. They were used for various working tasks. Herding, guarding, etc. Dogs need to be busy. They need to be loved on, not locked up.

If you or the wife is home all day watching the kids and the doggie gets loved and played with, fine. If you get up, walk the dog, lock it up, go to work and walk it before going to bed, you're doing your pet a great injustice.

Totally agree with you. I want to report these people for animal neglect. They technically aren't doing anything illegal, but I still want to at least inconvenience their pathetic lives.

Some people just love certain dog breeds and really would like to own them. Some of these people, disregarding (willfully or obliviously) any shortcoming of their property or situation, buy them anyway.

A friend of mine is really fond of Siberian Husky and insisted on keeping one in their backyard (which is no bigger than 50sqm and with two existing small dogs). Had his more logical wife not forbidden him, they would now be proud owners of a nice (if miserable) Husky.

I agree. I find dogs are more suited for people who are retired or self employed. They require more attention than other pets such as cats. Though even cats do require a certain amount of attention, but they wont get depressed as much as a dog when left alone all day every day.

I came in here to argue your point with exactly this line of reasoning. 🙂 Danes are awesome apartment dogs.
