Apache HTTP... any way to make it safe to use on local network

A while ago I set up an apache server with http access to my music so I could listen at work but after a while I was getting a virus/intrusion alarm from avast every day and to the point where I couldn't get ride of it and had to reinstall windows. I believe this was from the http server access to that system b/c I've never had a problem till then. Is there a good/easy way to lock down that system but allow outside access to it?

Install it on a decent platform. Read up on Apache security. Limit its access to the rest of the network.
