Color encodes useful information, especially for games. You can tell apart your friends (blue ships) from the enemies (red ships) or similar.

Before they had color, they also had textures to convey info.

Knowing when the other person is typing is NOT useful information. It will not tell you when you are going to receive your message. You get your message when the message appears.

Personally, IMHO, I find it useful, because it eliminates the need for more "Buddy, are you there? Answer me, are you on the phone? What are you doing right now? Are you still at your table?" kind of stuff. This is especially good if your buddy types quite slow, or if your buddy is typing a loooooooong message ;)

WTF piss with all those clients?

Get Trillian and be done. It isn't as vulnerable, and makes it a snap to keep track of contacts across the "big five", so to speak. It even does IRC :D

Whenever ICQ it is connected to something like:

You did know that AOL owns ICQ, right? They have for some time now.

<< ICQ sucks also. I think MSN is the best messenger though. Who honestly would pay for aim if they charged for it. >>

Retarded. There's nothing wrong with AIM. It's the easiest program to use, and nearly everyone is on it. MSN Messenger is just another example of how MS takes a good idea someone else had and tries to claim it as their own. What a load of crock.

<< What's the big deal. They are all the same.

I agree that the basics are the same, but some clients are designed better than others. For example, I dislike ICQ because every time I want to send text, I have to hit ctrl+enter to send; simply tapping enter moves me to the next line. And as of yet, I haven't been able to config the send button on the keyboard.

Also, MSN and Y! have a feature to let you see when the other person's keyboard is active, which is a very nice addition that AOL and ICQ lack. And Y! has IMvironments, which, although not of much use, is very nice looking ;) In addition, I've found the file transfer of ICQ to be unable to send my bytes to the other side; similar situation with AOL.

<---Likes Yahoo! 5.0, but nobody else has this recent 5.0 version of the client ;(

As far as ICQ goes, I only have to press Enter when I use it through Trillian. :D

Talk about threads being brought back from the dead. Let them try to charge for instant messenger, I would never use it.

<< I don't know about you, but AIM is the simplest, cleanest instant message program, especially if you remove the ad :)

I don't need to send files over AIM (except VERY rarely), I don't need to see if the other user is typing, I don't need to see if they reply or not, I don't need to play games with them, nor I don't need to talk live with them. All I want my Instant Message program to do is, send instant messages.

I *used* to use ICQ, about 4 years ago, when it wasn't bloated with useful features. AIM has one of the best, easiest to use interfaces out there.

I agree 100 %. I like AIM, I have ICQ but find it so annoying that I seldom even turn it on.
