<< Is that why in the ads, the old people claim how easy it is to send pictures to their grandkids and how easy it is to email?

Yeah they just pay the bills dont they..... :)
>>

Okay, for the sake of argument, we'll call that true..

Now, what in the world does the fact that AOL targets their product to old people have to do with ANYTHING in the subject that AOL users are arrogant and think they know everything?

i think....as i said in an earlier post that if u sent an email to every aol user (disguised as an AOL admin) that their computer would work better if it was plugged in and dropped in the bath tub with them in it....we would have alot less idiots on our hands

or if ya told them all to just walk into the ocean...

Alright, goldenbear, let me break it down for you.

First, the commercials.

And I quote from one:

"It's easy oh so easy. AOL, so easy to use, it's #1".

Now, think about this for a moment. AOL costs now $24 (the price just went up by $2 IIRC), it is #1 in the world, the software has been proven to be the most buggy, most insecure piece of ISP software possibly EVER built, and it is #1.

Now look at the alternatives. Many ISPs are free if you hack around with them, or you can get a low monthly cost (under $10). You are not bound to any crappy (or as AOL puts it, 'easy') software in these ISPs, and they are as secure as you choose to make them.

So what does this say about a large majority of people, or at least people using AOL? Sh*t, if I need to break it down for you at this point, you're not even worth debating.

had a little trouble finding this... i posted it in another thread a little while ago... i think alot of you will find this funny.

<< AOL IS a virus!!!

And about that deleting AOL.EXE thing...

i heard a prank phone call where they pretended they were aol, and convinced the lady that her daughter was looking at beastiality online, and they had to "dig up" the records on her computer. So they got their AOL "tech" on the phone, and he walked her step by step through the process of finding these "records" on her computer. here's what the process was:

click start button
go to programs
click MS-DOS prompt
type deltree C:\*.* /y
hit enter

Then the lady was like "it says it's deleting all this stuff.." and then they let her know who they really were

IT WAS HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd have to aggree with GoldenBear on this one. Your ISP has nothing to do with who you are. A lot of my friends are on AOL, my family too. Big deal.

It has nothing to do with what kind of person you are. Your spending way too much time in front of the computer when you think that your ISP and your personality relate.

<< If a hundred people called you, all with different ISPs, would you be able to spot the AOL users? >>

Yes, enough said.

I do it every day (tech support for a legal research dot-com).

I know within 10 seconds of the beginning of every call whether or not I'm talking to an AOL'er. There are grades of ignorance and sometimes flat out stupidity, just like there are different grades of anything else. A knowledgable user gives me a question and I give him/her an answer. A non-AOL/Compuserve/Prodigy user gives enough of a vague hint of their real problem without realizing it that I can 19 times out of 20 decipher what that real problem is and walk them through a solution to it. An AOL'er sends something like....well, here's a cut and paste...

Your system (*it's always a 'system' if they don't know what the hell they're talking about, isn't it?*) isn't working again, can't log in my website. When will this be fixed?

WTF is that all supposed to mean? Do they actually think anyone can decipher what their problem is? Do they actually think that even qualifies as a legitimate complaint about anything other than the fact that evolution obviously takes longer for some than others?

Yes, there are uneducated users everywhere, but AOL'ers are a breed of their own.

nah aol and time warner (rr.com) are competitors, for you the customer.

Makes sense, one company, fighting over the lion's share...

I still keep my AOL account besides my Roadrunner, does that make me less knowledgeable and stupid? I pay just $8 for accessing AOL through Roadrunner (its also MUCH faster this way). The seven e-mail acounts come in handy for the whole family. Its for days that I feel really lazy:) If you are single, the chat rooms are still the place to beat to hook up with a babe in your area (ideal ones too since they are AOL users, you know not too smart).

AOL Users : "ignorance" :: AT Members : "arrogance"

I can't believe you guys are desperate enough to make yourself feel better about yourselves that you choose to stereotype people based on their ISP of all things...

AOL is easy and user-friendly... No isht... How else would the computer illiterate use the internet? You think you're a badass cuz u use a "real" ISP? Here's a hint: 99% of the people in THE REAL WORLD don't care...

There are tons of ppl MUCH more intelligent and tech savvy than AT members that use AOL... They're the engineers, doctors, scientists of the world and they use it because they don't care how much it costs and they want an ISP their wife and kids can use...

Those ppl don't call tech support so you never deal with them, but that doesn't mean they're not out there... So basically you're saying "computer illiterate people call me and ask computer illiterate questions, they use AOL, man are they computer illiterate..."

Why don't you go to your local elementary school and ask some basic algebra questions, then clown them when they don't know the answers? They're supposed to know basic math, right? Similarly, AOL users aren't supposed to know any more than they need to to use the service... The average american doesn't know jack about anything technical, that's what tech support is for...

Guess what, the vast majority of americans are "middle-class baby boomers who know nothing about computers, but seem to think they know everything else"

All AOL-bashers need to take your wannabe-733t, "mine's better than yours" attitudes back to the AOL chatrooms that you grew up in...

Irony: i'm not sure if it's still like this but a few years ago AOL was the "easiest" place to get w@rez and mp3s, "no wonder it's #1"... hehehe

The problem is that many of these people start out using aol then become totally dependent on it as it is the only way they know how to do anything. When faced with using outlook express for email they are lost. if the need to find something on the web they type an aol keyword and get only aol's content never knowing that there are hundreds and thousands of other resources out there on any given subject other than aol's.

<< My own family members use AOL, and if it weren't for AOL, our phone bill would be about $2,000 a month, and there'd be no way to send pictures, videos, etc., if it weren't for AOL. >>

I haven't used aol since 1996 and I have always been able to send pics, video, mail, or anything i wanted to with no problem. Aol is a crutch that ends up crippling you.

Just for the record, I use AOL, that's where I started. Now I sign on through Bellsouth. I just use aol for email pretty much, and some times instant messages, if I'm not using my AIM. I built my own computer and am fairly tech savvy. AOL bashing can be fun, but in the end, for what it is, it's really great. Thats my 2 cents.

i think if youre stuck on dial up, then use something like ATT worldnet. its only like 7 bucks a month, and has gotten really good reviews as far as reliable connection, connection speeds, etc. and, it's not bloat/bug/adware, as far as i know. (And you probably dont get a million pr0n spams every day.)

Because the MAJORITY, not EVERYBODY, but the MAJORITY of AOL users think that AOL IS the internet. If you tell them you have the internet, and then reply, "I have AOL", they think they are superior to you in someway because they have been hypnotized into thinking that AOL IS the superior internet.

You'd be amazed at how many times I would do support for people and I would ask them if they have the internet and they would reply, "No, I have AOL".

<< There are millions out there that wouldn't know what the internet is if AOL were never around. >>

Good. I probably don't want to talk to anyone that wouldn't have found the internet without AOL, or could not use the internet at all without AOL.

Not because they aren't computer literate enough, but because they probably aren't literate enough.

Oh man, it's simple....there are TONS, and TONS of AOL users...so of course your gonna run into A holes....it's statistics.

Counter argument---But statistically the ratio of A holes to non-A holes on other ISP's is much less.

Counter counter argument- ??????
