I know someone that wants to look at their kids AOL Instant Messenger history. Since I dont have AIM, I have no idea where it might be stored.

ANyone know?

EDIT: My google searching shows many "IM Spy" type software. IS there any good ones that are free?

AIM doesn't have logging by default but your friend(..?) could easily install AIM+ from big-o-software and turn all the logging on, then just run the included history viewing program and look through all the logs (very nicely sorted) .. the settings could easily be turned off, so I guess for this alternative it depends on how intelligent the kids are ... Other than that you could just try alternative from google and see which best suits your needs.

I suggest you tell your friend to stop being such a fvcking asshole, and give their kid some privacy!

Good, constructive help. Did it ever occur to you that there is good reason why someone might want to check these things? The reason shouldn't matter anyhow, raise your own children how ever you want. Maybe, if you aren't going to actually help, maybe you should skip posting...

Now, to the thread starter. If other IM software is an option, I also know Trillian can log IM sessions. It is also fairly easy to turn off, and every time the kid chats with a friend they will see the past chat history too (Trillian can be set to store x# of charaters). To view past chat history, simply open a chat window with the other person. Otherwise, as was mentioned, AIM doesn't have this capability on it's own. At least not current versions.

Exactly. This is a mother at work who suspects her kid is engaged in illegal activity, and has seen a glimps of it on AOL IM. Me being the Network Admin, she asked if I knew how to spy on AOL IM. None of this is anyones business but hers, which is why I asked the question without an explination.

Thanks Dan for the trillian suggestion. I'll let her know about it also.

Use DeadAim or AIM+, altho i cant judge this person for wanting the software, because i dont know the situation with her child, but am curious to how old he is?

I accidently left the logging on my computer, and my parents came across it on accident, argh, worst mistake ever.

Not sure how much work you wanna get yourself in here, but you could install a packet sniffer and sort out the aim conversations. They're plain-text ascii so you can literally just read the packet payloads.

I imagine you could also write script to automate it.... but at this point we're talking a pretty big effort.

maybe somebody's already done it?

Deadaim is what I suggest. It's not transparent, however, so here's to hoping that he doesn't notice. :)

Using AIM+ it would probably be obvious to the child that logs are being created and he could try to delete them. I think the simplest way to do it is to use some kind of chat spying software that could run in the background surreptitiously. I know this software exists but I'm not aware of any particular programs.
