The damn video chat doesnt work as well as the one in MSN

Even worse, you either need to have all the sounds turned off in AOL, or you need them all turned on.

All I want is a beep when I recieve the first message so I know that someone IMed me. I dont want that stupid ding everytime during a chat.

Anywhere I can get a blank sound?

are you sure about that? it's not like that with earlier versions. I only have mine beep on a first message or when someone signs on/off.

yup, that's how it is. i prefer the sounds the same way you guys have them, but 5.5 won't let you do that.

and i can't get rid of the damn Today window!

You can disable it in preferences.

The webcam support isnt webcam support at all, its just MS netmeeting which is bundled with windows.

It's the AOL something window, but it can be turned off in Preferences (second checkbox from the bottom of the startup part)

Yes you can (at least you could in the beta of it, and the current beta). It's cleverly renamed and placed differently, I thought the removed it for a week or two until I found it.

you can make a blank sound. Go to sound recorder and record a small blank file and save it.

yeah it forced me to upgrade today...popups in the sys notification area I can't turn off, installed icons that I said not to install, and also snuck in wildtangent spy crap I never asked for and got my firewall alerting.

Later on I am going to do a complete scan of my PC and see what else it hid.

I am surprised there isn't a class-action against them...

AOL avoids class-action lawsuits by claiming it was a "programming error" and releasing a patch about 5 seconds before the Justice department is ready to file.

Get Trillian for chat and keep older, legitimate copies of MSN and AIM hidden away somewhere on the offchance you need to videoconferrence. And run spybot and adaware.

The system tray notifications can be turned off, look in the preferences.
