I have aol dsl which uses a dsl usb modem. I would like for my pc's (4) to all share the dsl internet connection. What do I need to purchase to do that. I know nics and cable but what else. I also want to share files and printer too.

Other topic: Is it possible to use the dsl connection without having to sign on to AOL to get access?

Thanks...

Does your DSL modem only allow you to use a USB port, or does it also have an Ethernet port? If it has an Ethernet port, the easiest solution is to get a router (I use the Linksys BEFSR41 v.2 which does all the routing and also acts as a 4 port hub). If your modem does not have an Ethernet port, you can just set up your computers in a "normal" network and use a program like Wingate to do the connection sharing.

The cheapest way to accomplish this is to buy a hub or a switch (hubs are cheaper). If you are using Windows, you can use the "Internet Connection Sharing" program that comes on the Windows CD. If you are using a *nix, you can jank around with your ip settings and let it act as a router.

The most elegant way for you to accomplish this is to buy an ethernet based DSL modem, and a router.

Does AOL DSL require you to use their crap software like their dialup service does? If so, you may be up a creek regardless of the networking aspect...

The only way to share AOL is to use ICS, and then only the ICS in 98 or ME.

AOL uses a propietary PPOE that will not work with any router out there.
