AOL/CompUSA DSL for $40/Month period (not intro rate)??

I was in CompUSA last night picking up the APEX DVD for $50 (paid the regular $99 before $30 MIR and will PM today for the extra $20 instant rebate -- wanted to make sure I got one before they fly off the shelves today!)

Anyway, while checking out CSR told me that CompUSA had partnered with AOL to offer DSL service for $40/month set price -- not a promotional rate for the first couple months. He said to come back tomorrow and that they'd be signing people up. Not sure if this was unique to me store (San Bernardino, CA) or not?? I don't see it advertised anywhere. They may be testing it.🙂
 
My friend had AOL DSL for a couple of months..... it was his worst nightmare....... then he switched to cable.
 
I paid $40 for my cable. If I remember right, DSL goes up to 640Kb/s. My cable can go up 1.5M and some time up to 2-3M (morning or late night).
 
my timewarner/roadrunner cable USED to be cool...but now my computer/cable modem crash at least 15 times a day...and timewarner says i have a freak scenario. They said almost all their customers use XP (like me) without problems, so i'm DLing win2k right now to see if that'd fix it. I've wiped the boot drive three times now and tried running just the basic drivers, but the comp still crashes. GRRR!!!! Dial up isn't sounding so bad at this point now

bmacd, Your OS isn't effected by cable or DSL.... Now your NIC may not be good but the PC doesn't know what kind of TCP traffic its getting...


As to this deal, I COMPusa and AOL own no phone equipment... SO what your getting is subletted from one of the baby bells... Fed law says that the big phone companies have to sell service to folks like AOL so they can resell it....

IF you have a problem then after contacting AOL they will contact your actual provider....

Most of the DSL said it goes up to 1.5M, I used to have pacbell as my ISP, I only got 700kb, after I switch to DSLextreme,even at the same location with the same pacbell phone line, I got between 800-1.3m even at 8-10pm.
 
Great post, I am not kidding.

I live in MI and my friend has AOL DSL and he tested it at the speed sites that I go to and the numbers are around 300/500 approximently. My cable as others have stated will clock at 1.8/2.5 sometimes. I have been looking for a reason to go to DSL but if I went with AOL I wouldn't use their software it just screws it up. I also don't use any of Time Warner RR's software either.


Please post DSL deals and don't take this as a thread crap $40.00 a month is a good deal

I believe that AOL DSL uses some obscure form of PPPoE that doesn't work with a lot of routers, though I am not positive. Might want to check that out.

You may feel that is true but as far as AOL DSL goes it has everything to do with your OS.

My dad had been having problems with AOL for nearly 9 months, with service being anywhere from 19kbs - 150kbs and AOL consistently denied there was any problem. On top of that he had recieved 4 different replacement modems none of which did any good including his current Westell modem which doesn't have the "Winpoet" interface that gives most people problems. Well I finally convinced him to let me put Win XP on his computer and now the DSL is like night and day, no phone calls to AOL whatsoever and the speeds have not dropped below 1.5mbps.

So if you have AOL DSL don't try and use it with an inferior OS because it WILL have numerous problems. This isn't an isolated case either many of the peole in my dad's neighborhood also have problems with their respective DSL speeds and the only common thread is AOL and Win 98/SE/ME of about 30 people only 3 run a Win2k client like my dad and those three are the only ones happy.

Of course and I'm sure they want you to buy another ip for multiple computers because of course you cant have 2 computers connected to the internet without 2 ip's.

You better work on your memory because you are wrong. My DSL is up to 1500Kb/s and if you want to pay more it CAN go MUCH higher. Also I don't have to SHARE my bandwith with any of my neighbors. As far as AOL, who knows what speeds they advertise.

I only see DSL going up to 640k for every provider, They probably put the higher cap on it when you pay more.

Verizon is 768/128 and I can pretty much max that out. For $10 more you can get 1.5MB/128.
 
I got to said something about this..

I been with aol dsl over years.. it is bad, cause my local provider is verzion.. the most is only 600kb.. Not sure folks elsewhere might get better connection through aol.. but my SUCK ! CANCELLED !!

I think everyone should goes w/ Earthlink in NYC area.. they offer 1.5 Mb if you within the OC
