My girlfriend got AOL cable but wants it so she can use IE or Netscape without opening AOL first. Apparently AOL wants you to look at there browser first:p. Anyhoo, just curious if its possible to do this and how... Plus doesnt this double your chances of outages(AOL OR Time Warner could go down) that would suck, getting screwed both ways.

If at all your g/f has the choice, try to avoid using AOL as your ISP. If I recall correctly, as a condition of the merger with Time-Warner, AOL has to open their cable network to third-party ISPs. It sounds like AOL is still using their proprietary authentication method on the cable connection.

<< AOL is offering cable now ? I thought they just offered DSl or at least that's all I've seen them offering here. >>

Really?!?!?! Hawaii has it now, seems like Hawaii is pretty high on the food chain for this stuff. I guess that's one of the perks of being a little rock in the middle of a big pond. Anyway, seems like regular RR with all the AOL bloat that she'd like to avoid if possible. Before anyone asks the reason her dad got it is because he wanted to keep his AOL mail acct for work purposes and had enough of dialup.

If she doesn't want to open the AOL software then she needs to just get Road Runner.

I think AOL has an option where you dont use them as an ISP but you can still use them for mail..something like that. Combine that with yakkos suggestion.

I think that costs like $15/mo though. Not sure if they'd give a family discount (since RoadRunner is an AOL TW company).

Shoulda just got dsl or cable from other provider then set aol to a byoa 9.99 a month or a like hourly rate one that way it would be cheap to still have ur aol account that u can sign on thru dsl/cable, or if u get hourly then just use aol netmail for free.
