This Option (Older versions available for free at oldversion.com)

OR

Gaim + Power Menu

(Power Menu for minimizing to system tray. Great program, minimizes anything to system tray, and super tiny. Use the Hidself off switch as well.)

Yeah. I do the same. I think I've purchases 3 or 4 copies of DeadAIM now for my laptop and desktop. They keep track of how many times you install it and after a couple reformats, my key stopped working until you buy it again. It's only $5 though so I don't mind.

I can't believe people are still using regular AIM with so many good alternatives:
Trillian, GAIM, and Miranda.

I personally use aim and have been doing so for a long time. Gaim 2.0 beta is great, looks very similar to 1.x but it seems more organized. Also don't mind Trillian at all that much and miranda, I haven't tried it recently but know a few buddies who use it.

AIM is definitely losing popularity though, it used to be THE instant messenger to use when I was in high school. Now, with AOL's lost a big share of their users and are still losing users due to their extreme advertising and annoyances. AOL should be firing whoever decided to put all the crap into their once-ever-so-popular application.

I tried Trillian at one point (due to AIM connection issues with my old router). I thought it was alright, but it was kind of annoying how people's profiles would not be formated with Trillian 3.0 Basic. Plus, with AIM 5.5 and DeadAIM, I get all that I need - tabbed IMs and no annoying ad.

I just wish all the IM networks would interconnect, then we could let the best piece of software win out.

yeah triton is just another way for aol to try and seduce you into using their products, the only good benefit triton brings is minimizing the number of windows during conversations by keeping multiple tabs in one box, but I believe the paid for version of trillion does that. what truly sucks about triton is it doesnt let you edit your buddy list other than changing the screen name or deleting them.
