aol 9.0 shell in windows xp

My 85 year old aunt who lives 2000 miles away received a computer as a gift. All of her questions made no sense until after a grueling hour on the phone I realized that her XP OS is running under an "AOL alternative simple to use computer interface" Anybody know about this and how to get rid of it? I mean virtually every function on the computer tries to dial her up to aol. Even the start button is aol oriented. The desktop is full of aol "circles" with moronic shortcuts that all sign you on. It's devious. Please help!
