Mmmh. I will try that manually later. Not sure why explorer.exe would mess up the gfx.

taskkill /F /IM Explorer.exe
age2_x1.exe
Start explorer.exe

That's for the expansion, put in the age2_x1 folder inside the main AoE folder. Works wonderfully.
