OK, here's what happened: My system shut down once and wouldnt turn back on. I smelled something burnt, and thought the cpu may have fried. I took it to my friends cpu and installed it in his board which was able to run the cpu that I had (he was running the same as mine). I wanted to insert the cpu in his board and turn it on to see if it boots, that way i'd know if it was my cpu that was fried or my motherboad. Well, after i installed it in and booted, it didnt turn on and apparently I think his mobo may have been fried from putting my (unknown at the time) bad cpu in the slot. Now what I'm wondering is, can this actually happen, or did something else happen I'm not ware of, and is there a way to "test" the motherboard yourself to see if it's functional or not?

U have the MSI KT3 Ultra2 mobo just like mine and U get a panel on the back of the case with 4 LED lights. Please look at the manual and they will tel U error codes for the lights and also ... Do U get any beeps when U try to boot up ? ... If so then check the AMI website for the error codes and that should be able to help U determine what the prob is
Hope this helps

I had a similar problem not that long ago. Still havent gotten around to fixing it though. The problem was with a KT3 Ultra2 Board too. I don't think a CPU can fry a motherboard although I may be wrong. I guess anything is possible

Hey guys. Just to clear things up, I'm not worried about my motherboard, it's my friends. See he got a new processor because after I put his back in his motherboard after I had my damaged one in there, his cpu was then fried. He now has a new cpu, and is afraid to install it on that motherboard, and he doesn;t have the money for a new one. So I'm trying to figure out if theres a way to check if that board is damaged or not.

Looks like you owe your friend a new motherboard.

Btw, this same thing happened to me and my roommate. I tried to install my CPU into his mobo for diagnostics, thus frying his motherboard. Lucky the warranty hadn't run out at that stage. The oddest thing of all was that the CPU turned out to be OK. It was my motherboard that was bad in the first place. I RMA'd that bloody ECS and got the CPU working fine in the new mobo. Btw, my roommates mobo was also ECS. Craptastic POS.
