Anyway to start a PC without using the button on the case...?

Long story short, I think the wiring on the power button on my case is screwed. I'd like to be able to start my comp without having to push the button. I thought I heard somewhere you could touch the appropriate jumpers on the mobo with a screw driver and you could start it that way, but I tried and nothing happend. Anyone know a way to do this?

Pic Maybe you're not hitting the correct pins. Check your manual as the authoritative answer on which pins to go after. If that isn't fixing it, post full specs for a troubleshoot. 🙂

or just get a new case. cases are cheap as hell. Aside from that, if your computer supports it, u can power-on via LAN (your comp is never truly 'off' when u turn off the power. You have to physically take out the power cord for it to be truly 'off').

What mechBgon said. Screwdriver works for me all of the time. Just make sure you are shorting the two power pins and not something else.

Go to radio shack and buy a switch that is push button nomally open and wire that to your motherboard using your case connectors. BUt yea, you can get a cheap case for like $30 shipped at newegg.com. Or get a cool one for like $60 shipped.

I have used a reset button before and just rewired it to the power on posts.

Sometimes a bad power supply can be the culprit. I suppose the power on circuit can ware out.

Check your motherboard manual for the correct pins to attach the power switch header too.

Hold a screw driver on the pins for a second and the PC will startup.

Yeah, in my bios I setup a startup password, and I made the password "O". So to turn on my computer I just hit the o key on my keyboard.

That way I can tuck my PC back in the corner out of the way.

yeah, on my computers, i just use the keyboard to turn it on. but some i know some motherboards, have a jumper on the mobo that allow you todo this and others require you to activate a option in the bios to turn your computer on by the keyboard/mouse.

Thanks for all the quick replies. I just went and grabbed a generic ATX case + PSU at lunch, swapped stuff over and she fires up again.

That's a good idea with the reset switch, never thought of that. I'll also check my BIOS to see if I can set it to boot of a mouse click or something similar...

I've been hotwiring my pc for about 6 months since the button spring broke. Pull wires out (green/black), and leave them hanging for easy access. touch the two wires briefly to crank your system up.
