Anyway to see if WinXP (home) is corrupted and how?

I wonder if there is anyway (similar to running a virus scan, or not) to see where XP corrupted?

I know it's gotta be, but that's all I know>when sending something to the recycle bin, it just disappears.

I've done, I think, all the normal things>made sure that check mark that enables this is not checked, made sure I have plenty of space allocated, System Restore, etc.

In Windows Explorer, RB just sits on destop, is this the correct path? What should be the correct path?

Totally stymied here. I asked this question awhile back on Tech Help board, but was then away from computer for a couple of weeks, and of course thread was eventually deleted before I could see if anyone came up with a solution.

Intall it and then do what? Find it how? Sorry, but I am not familiar with all this stuff.

And I have searched and searched, and asked on all kinds of boards, and received no answers that helped.

Tell me what to do after I install tweakui, and I will try.

Frankly, I think no one knows how to fix this problem. The next response will be "reinstall Windows".

If it seemed to be a hardware problem, everyone would suggest I "change my power supply."

Maybe I should start playing Solitare with real card, hey? 😉

Just install it and you will find the feature which lets you modify the desktop (add or remove: recycle bin. my computer, my documents etc.). Use google and get the latest version of tweakui and give it a try.

On XP the default path is C:\RECYCLER (type that into RUN and it should take you to your Recycle Bin (s)).

If your running Norton AV (or any other Symantec product that 'protects' [...yeh right] the recycler it has a nasty habit of not displaying whats in the recycler.........presuming it lets you find it in the first place.

Try this......open up Nero Express | Data Disk | Add | My Comp | C: | Recycler and Double click | Select your Bin (if more than one) and double click again.......................you should now be able to see the TRUE contents of the recycle bin.......presuming there is something to look at.

I think you misunderstood me a bit. The Recycle Bin is on my Desktop, the problem is that when I delete anything, I get the popup asking if I really want to send this to the RB, I answer yes, but opening up the RB after this shows nothing.

I haven't lost the Bin itself, just everything I send to it.

OK, did first part (the Run), and it took me to that folder-but nothing in there to see, even though it shows 389 MB (35 files, 6 folders) as size. It is marked as "Read only", but I just changed that before replying. However! I just reopened that path, because I forgot how big it was, and now it is back to being "Read only".

I think we may be getting closer! (I hope!)

Now it's making me go through a dance where when it asks me if I want to apply change to read only, I click apply, the popup closes, but "apply" button is not greyed out, and even when I click OK, it asks me again.

As to the other 2 suggestions, I have never had any Symantec on this machine (using AVG) and I don't have Nero.

Don't give up on me!!

If you right click on the recycle bin and choose "properties", is the box checked that says "Do not move files to the recycle bin. Remove files immediately when deleted." If so, uncheck that and send something to the recycle bin and see if it shows up.

Nope, it is unchecked, that's one of the first things I looked at.

This might help.

I have XP Home, not NT. So I am always logged on as Admistrator, AFAIK. Any way, I tried doing what that article suggested, but didn't have all the options shown. Think we are getting closer to solutrion, though. *fingers crossed*

To all, thanks for your help so far.

When you delete something, even though it doesn't show up in the recycle bin, if you right click the recycle bin, is empty recycle bin an option or is it greyed out?

Sorry, in that case the only suggestion I would have had would be to get rid of Norton products, but Monzie already mentioned that and you don't use Symantec stuff.

What, I dunno, but something in the "fiddling" in response to all the above posts seemed to have worked!!

I wish I could say which one, but I just tried the "drag and drop" thing and Recycle Bin seems to be working again. The right click also works. And if I right click the Bin, it now shows the option to empty!

I have my fingers crossed that the next time I reboot, it still works.

Thanks for all your patience and help!
